[Help needed] Icon for SD.Net!

Does anybody know how to make those favicon.ico files? That controls the little tiny icon that shows up next to "StarDestroyer.Net" in your browser bar, if your browser supports that. I know that IE shows it in the address bar to the left of the URL, and also in the Bookmark list.
Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the "favicon.ico" file format. Anyone around here familiar with it?

As far as I know, you need some sort of icon-editing program (like one you would use to change, say, Winblows icons). I know there's no way to do it in PSP (I've tried - didn't work XP).

The favicon.ico file must be in the root directory ofthe site.
it's size is 16x16 pixels.
You can do any image at this size in any editor, and save it as a *.bmp (maximum 256 colors - better just 16). Then you can use an icon editor like those found at these adresses:
http://www.favicon.co.uk
http://ranfo.com/iconedit.html
Long link
Or you can just create the icon directly in these editors.
Good luck!

I was goofing off with that, and unfortunately, I have no idea how one would make a good looking Imp logo in it. Better stick to an "SD"...

Irfanview will make .ico files from any image. It's available for any Windows OS. I think you have WinXP but I'm not positive about that. The program is freeware BTW, no spyware or anything like that included.
This one I made from the Treder avatar in the av gallery:
These I made from googled pics:

Those icons are cool, but IE crunches them to 16x16 and makes them look like shit. Is there any way to fix that (other than Mozilla, Opera, Firefox, etc)?

Does the .ico file format support transparency?

Yes, it would have to. Windows Desktop icons are .ico format, and they tend to be largely transparent.

Make sure to check the developers website. Webattacks versions of programs are usually a little old.

An .ico plugin for gimp, only loads not saves at the moment tho (a gifted one could probably rough out the saving portion of the code with a little time and effort tho...).

Shouldn't you also have to add a <link> tag to your pages?
Here's a PNG2ICO converter

Yes, but I'm pretty sure that it's only 1-bit alpha, like GIF, unlike PNG-24. So a pixel can only be visible or invisible.

Well, I made up an icon and associated it with the page.
Seems to work fine on Mozilla, but on IE you have to bookmark the page before it shows up. Apparently, you should stick to 16 colors, and a 16x16 bitmap. Given those restrictions, it's amazing that the icon looks like anything at all.

Well, in any case, it looks good, and works fine in Opera. Had to close the tab before it would work in the addy bar, but no biggie.

In Netscape it works fine on the tab, but the addy bar is intermittent on the boards, still looks good though.

For me it shows up on the address bar in Netscape but doesn't appear in the bookmark listings but I think that happens with most web pages.
It seems to work fine in the address bar and bookmark listings on whatever version of IE I've got burried on this machine.
