These are a creation of the Black Death. With so many dead, monks started to get creative with all of the bones having to be pulled from the crypts to make room for all of the bodies. There are entire churches from this period that are faced in bones.

If youlook behind the one on the left you can see the bones stacked up like cord wood behind it. Is not the scuplture much better looking? Remember this is froma a period when many were actually buried in the basements of the church itself.
