Taking Screenshots from avi files

I put this here because it's photo-related, but if someone thinks it's more towards computers, feel free to move it to G&C.
I am watching something (the Gravitation anime, fan subbed, in case anyone cares), and I want to take a few screen shots. Unfortunately, pausing the thing and pressing "Print Screen" does jack shit (there's a black box where the video image should be), and Winamp 5 doesn't seem to have the ability to take screenshots from a video. Any suggestions?

Some of the dedicated DVD players have that capability, powerdvd, for example, but if anyone has any actual screenshot takers, I too would be interested to hear about it.

Yeah, pdvd has a select source function, just choose your file with that and press c to take screenshots.

Alright. I don't have a DVD player, so I had no reason to have PowerDVD. Luckily though, my dad DOES have a DVD Player, and it came with pdvd. *skips off to get the cd*
thanks Rye.

Virtualdub can copy screenshots from an AVI file, and it's free.

What I want to know is why you're watching Gravitation

Because I love the manga, and a friend happened to have all the anime episodes. So she burned them onto a CD (rather, two) for me, and I'm watching them. *hums along to Super Drive*

Gravitation (Wikipedia link)
Some Gravitation fan site
EDIT: Fixed stupid links.
EDIT2: Power DVD is a free trial, and will expire soon. (had to download, because the CD will "only work on a DELL system") I'll try Virtualdub.

i recomend adobe premiere. besides taking screen shots you can also have a whole bunch of fun with the avi itself. create cool effects and whatnot.

Ah. But Adobe premiere costs money. Quite a lot of money, if I remember correctly. Thanks for the recommendation salm, I'll use that if I ever really go into video editing. But all I needed was a screenshot or two this time.

I refuse to use Kazaa anyway. There's better programs out there for that kind of thing, if I was so inclined to do it.

Time for the relatively new reply: I live in Canada, so it's legal.

Adobe premier isn't an mp3.

Yeah, but there's a loophole which makes kazaaing ANYTHING technically legal.
