Quarterly SD.net modelling competition!

Post by Beowulf »

Announcing the first of many quarterly modelling competitions. Yeah, I'm bored, and I want to see what You can model.

Rules:
1. Final images to be in by Sept 30, no exceptions. On October 1st, the poll(s) will go up.

2. Judging will be by the SD.net denizens.

3. Do anything you want for this first contest. No limit to what you can model.

4. All images must be done utilizing a rendering program. No drawn pictures accepted.

5. All candidates must have an untextured version available for proof of authenticity.

6. All candidate images must be new for this contest. No fair using prior images.

7. You must have fun

8. There are no more rules.

I'd recommend having more than just one image of the model, so that the judges can get a better view of the object.

There are a fair number of free programs out there for those who don't have one.

I think I'll try this one out.

I'll give it a go, though I texture for shit...

A technical question:

Do we post the WIP's here, or in our own threads?

Umm... Own threads. When the deadline nears, I'll post a new thread to put the final pictures in.

That might spawn quite a few threads. Maybe there should be some naming convention?

I think I'll try a ship from my next game-world.

The number of threads spawned depends on the number of entrants. Based on experience... There probably won't be more than a couple of actual entrants. The last time we had one of these competitions, I don't recall there being even 6 entries total. Just make sure your thread is marked appropriately...

Okay, I'm digging this thread back up so that we have a discussion thread for the entries in the entry thread.

As of now, I have only one comment:

5. All candidates must have an untextured version available for proof of authenticity.
So does this mean I can not have my models UV mapped, or what exactly do you mean?

It means your final versions are to be however final you want them to be, but you have to post wireframes or untextured images to prove that you're the one who made them.

So this is not just a modelling contest?

Should i remove my WIPs then? The models are of course finals, but they lack texturing, which will be done some time later.

Well, at least i have no problem with providing untextured versions :D

Thanx Shinova, but i think you are exaggerating. Some guys do super models with less than 10000 polys. All my models which i currently added as entries got .. uhm ... close to 4 million polies:

Alien queen with guns: 900.000
"Origins" scene: 1.1 million
Third wave race: 1.5 million (with exo, skin, muscles, endo)
Third wave mech: more than 300.000 polies
Third wave fighter: more than 100.000 polies

Only the very first concept for my Third wave stuff was low poly with 5000.

4 million?

Holy shit!

My rifles are around 3500 at the most, since for one, my computer craps out at about 5000+ and to actually have them playable in HL, I have a budget of around 3000+ prior to backface deletion =/

The voters will decide if the untextured models are worthy. Though the fact I asked for a untexture model for proof that you were the creator might have hinted that the expectation would be that they would be textured.

Not that bad, but it's a 900mhz that can barely run 3dsmax, and so I do 99% of all my modelling in Milkshape 3D, which has a tendency to run like clay once you go over 4000 or so :D

weird, i just got a new comp, but 2 weeks ago i ran max on an 800Mhz with a GeForce II MT and it worked quite good up to 40 000 polys.

My Athlon 1200 with a Gforce 2 Pro can handle 500000 polies easily in Blender. And up to 1 million you can still work comfortable.

Yeah, but ms3d doesn't handle that kind of polycount. Besides, my main interest is low-poly modelling. I'd rather wait with the super-detailed meshes (for normal mapping and so) until I can afford a rig that can run those newer engines decently.

Crud, at the pace I'm working I don't think I'll make it in time for the deadline. (The relative scale of the project, and the fact that school is now in full swing for me)

My problem was that I forgot all about the contest until Beowulf posted the entry thread.

But I think I'll still post the finished work as a random piece of art once it's finished.

But to those who made it, awesome work, all of you, and good luck during the voting. *thumbsup*
