Working with GIF images

Forgive my all-consuming ignorance in matters of photomanipulation, oh great masters of Photoshop, but I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out how in the hell to get my computer to open GIF files for alteration. Specifically, I need to cut this:

Image

cut down to proper size to use in a sig; that is, I need to get rid of all the white border. However, my computer refuses to open the damn thing even to view, much less cut on. (And then I'll need hosting, but one thing at a time...)

Just use GIMP, open the GIF file, do a contiguous-region select on the white image, invert the selection, copy it, paste it to a new image, and then save as a new GIF. Easy as pie. Alternatively, just eyeball-crop it.

Yeah, that's what I thought. My problem is mainly that my computer refuses to recognize it as a picture file at all. All my image programs refuse to open it on the basis of it being an invalid file type, even though its a gif and I know for a fact that I've worked with gifs before. I think AOHell is just screwing up the pics I try to save. Man, I can't wait to get back to school and a real Internet connection...

Edit: Though I solved the problem in another way; had one of my friends do it and then put it on my Photobucket account direct from his site. Its good, but its annoying that I had to resort to that.

Meh. Picture quality's down, though. I'll have to run the LAN cable to my other computer, which can and will cooperate with me when I manipulate images...

Of course, you could always try a screenshot...

Yeah, I'll try that. I'm sure you know who this is for, ver. Full Quiver Mission's getting the anti-Confederacy smackdown treatment, at their own boards this time.

Let me guess: you're using Internet Exploder?

No, not at the moment, though I've never had any of those horrendous problems people tell me about when I do...

So you're using some other browser and you can't just hit "save as" on an image?

No. I saved it like that, as I have done many times before (using IE, and it worked fine then), but the file was corrupted. I saved the picture as a gif at first, then tried it again as a jpeg, but the computer failed to recognize it in either format. In conclusion, I hate AOL and wish my parents would wise up and get a different ISP. Either way, the problem's solved now.

How could I NOT know who it's for? ;) I've only known a select few people that that could apply to, and the margins narrow when we're talking people we both know. :P

Hmmm....... original was in GIF and now there's JPG.... here's it in GIF and PNG format, both which don't lose information from the original. (The PNG version is only 36 bytes bigger than the JPG as well.)

ImageGIF version (10,555 bytes)
ImagePNG (8,446 bytes)

You know, of course, that they ban non-fundies at their boards, but SOAS is gearing up for a suicide refutation run of their forums if you're interested. The plan is to demonstrate the problems inherent in having all your mods in one time zone.

Edit: That invitation goes for all interested parties; contact me or Alyrium for details.
