Voting thread for SDN Plastic Modelling Competition

Post by YT300000 »

Yes, its a voting thread, not a judging thread. :P

Heh. That was fun. Maybe making this biannual (Christmas and summer, ie. the only time we have the time for modelling) is in order.

So, the choices are above. Here is our work:

First up, Ma Deuce's M1A2:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/ ... odel_1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/ ... side_2.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/JonNik/front.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/ ... muzzle.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/ ... s_T-34.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/ ... ar_low.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/JonNik/rear.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/JonNik/M2HB.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/ ... pplies.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/ ... cupola.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/ ... e_rack.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/JonNik/Me.jpg

Then Thaq's interesting kitbash (technically the converted NCC-1701, but whatever):

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v498/ ... G_0140.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v498/ ... G_0139.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v498/ ... G_0135.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v498/ ... G_0132.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v498/ ... G_0131.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v498/ ... G_0130.jpg

And Shep's Admiral Ushakov BCGN:

http://www.stardestroyer.net/Armour/Pla ... vAngle.jpg
http://www.stardestroyer.net/Armour/Pla ... Angle2.jpg
http://www.stardestroyer.net/Armour/Pla ... vSide2.jpg
http://www.stardestroyer.net/Armour/Pla ... ovTop2.jpg
http://www.stardestroyer.net/Armour/Pla ... vSize1.jpg
http://www.stardestroyer.net/Armour/Pla ... vSize3.jpg
http://www.stardestroyer.net/Armour/Pla ... shakov.jpg

And finally, my MiG-27 Flogger:

http://yt300000.250free.com/model/MiG271s.jpg
http://yt300000.250free.com/model/MiG272s.jpg
http://yt300000.250free.com/model/MiG273s.jpg
http://yt300000.250free.com/model/MiG274s.jpg
http://yt300000.250free.com/model/MiG275s.jpg
http://yt300000.250free.com/model/MiG276s2.jpg

Yes, two of us (Thaq and myself) don't have "proof pics." But since the contest would be rather... barren with just two entries, and I totally forgot about that requirement myself, and because I trust the four of us (even myself), I'm abolishing that rule.

So vote. Please.

Ma Deuce gets my vote for finish, detail, and fit with no apparent gaps.

Thag, runner-up.

I vote for Ma Deuce. With the right lighting, angle, etc., the M1A2 could easily look like the real deal.

My little KBoP didn't count, I gather?

Tough decision, regardless. I'll break it down, pro and con.

To be as small as she is, Shep's Ushakov is crisply painted and clean-looking. That merits points. I do see some gaps and areas that probably shouldn't be painted red--I'd have to ask Shep to confirm, though, since he's the military expert--but I've seen much worse at local modeling competitions.

YT's Flogger also looks good for its seemingly tiny scale. It sports an exceptionally smooth paint job and has a nice gloss-coat, too. The only criticism I can make is the jet itself is spartan. Some decals, a Soviet star on the wings perhaps :?:, would be nice (if possibly inaccurate).

Coincidentally, I've seen a few Detroyat conversions at Starship Modeler, but Thag's is one of the best I've seen yet. I'm looking hard to find fault. Even squinting at the pictures, I don't see the ugly seam that runs around the saucer rim. (I shouldn't complain; Polar Lights' Trek stuff is good, certainly better than the nothing w/ which we were left for many years.) And I definitely like the stand--the mark of a display-minded modeler :)

The only nitpick I can make is I think I can make out a little silvering; and if not that, I think I can see a decal or two's edges. But other than that, it's a fine model. Thag did a fantastic job "frosting" the bussard collectors. Truly impressive attention to detail overall.

Ma Deuce's M1A2...what can I say? Very nice. I would definitely like to see some weathering on this kind of subject--pastel chalks are a pretty safe bet, and believe it or not, with a little know-how can make a superb wash as well--but again, that's looking hard to find fault with all four models.

I'd have to say it comes down to the Detroyat and M1A2. Tough choice. As much as I like the TOS ship and as great a job as Thag did on her, the tank's a much more complex, time-consuming model.

I have to give Ma Deuce the nod.

I'm curious why your BoP isn't in the contest, too, Sean. :?

I'm going against myself, but I'm voting for the Abrams. You did a real good job on that. Only one complaint though: it's a tank, where's the dirt????

Havn't weathered it yet, because as yet I'm unsure of my weathering skills. I've got an old, cheap model of a Leo 2A5 I put together about 6 years ago, so I'll practice weathering on that before attempting anything with the Abrams...

I voted for Ma Deuce's M1A2 Abrams. All four models are very solid. The Enterprise kitbash has a nice neat decal job.

The T34 looks nice too - maybe he will star in the next comp. 8)

I voted for the kitbash ST ship since I think it looks badass and takes more creativity and subtler skills to kitbash something and have it look right than to exactly reproduce something that already exists.

That said, I think all of the models were kickass and put me to shame for my feeble modeling skills. I especially enjoyed Shep's 1:1 scale German Sheppard.
