Do any of you know of any freeware or low-cost program for image postprocessing? I'm trying to get something out of POV-Ray and I noticed a fair bit of post processing work is necessary.

So, any suggestions?

Paint Shop Pro is pretty good. It used to be about $40 when it was at version 5.0, but I think it's gone up to about $70 for version 7.

If you're rich, and have a Mac, Photoshop is ace. Really.

I used to use it at work, simple enough to use, but lots of power, and a whole horde of plugins available for everything you ever need.

Works better on a Mac though, they're optimised for Media Stuff.

Sadly, I'm a university student, and it means all the money I can gather goes into booze. :D

Anyway, thank you for the suggestion, but the price range is a bit too high for me...

Works just as well on a PC really, there might be something with that whole colorsync thing though, but I've never had that problem.

If you want to be legal, it should be noted that gimp is available for Windows too.

Well there are plenty of things you can download from Kazaa too.

Macs have slightly better memory optimisation than Windows (The x86 is an inherently hideous architecture, due to the backward comptibility with the oldest of the old in the range). They actually worked some optimisation for packages like Photoshop (and possibly PS in particular) into the architecture.

When they were harping on about how much faster the PowerPC chip was than an equivalent x86, they based all the benchmarking on performance in Photoshop.

Gimp is perfectly good though, if you don't have a few grand in your back pocket.

I've never heard of macs as having good memory management, their speed issues where not because of the processor as a whole but because of the altivec-chipset that came into play during usage of photo-shop filters.
Ofcourse today, not even that helps.

Ugh. Half the "cracks" on Kazaa or Gnutella are virus-infected. I wouldn't touch Kazaa with a ten-foot pole when it comes to something like that.
