I found this picture as a headliner on the BBC. Any guess as to what vehicle this is mounted on?

Looks like some photoshopping to me. To my knowledge, there are no miniguns like that in the arsenal which are not mounted on aircraft...with the exception of that one anti-aircraft minigun mounted on one of those old vietnam-era amphib tank chassis.

Then again, I wasn't in the armor corps.

What looks like a Humvee is in the bottom left, for scaling. ("campershell" and whip amtenna )

Its perfectly possibul that some armored unit borrowed a minigun off a helicopter unit, there bound to have some spare weapons after all. As for what vehicle it is, it doesn't look like the top of a Stryker to me, the boxyness suggest an M113 or hummve but I don't think its really possibul to tell

According to Shep's new thread in HAB, it's a Hummer.

I actually saw it firing in a news clip (yes it is on a Humvee): At first I thought I was seeing things, but the sound a minigun makes when it fires is quite unmistakable...

The BBC has changed the News clips available on video, I don't think you can catch it anymore.

When I read through the Tom Clancy Special Forces book when he talks about Humvees and the special cut down version for faster transport he mentioned that Miniguns can and have been put on Humvees.

I saw it too. It distinctly had a six-slot bucket-style flash suppressor attached to the muzzle end, like so.

The M134's are available now because Aviation now beleves their caliber is too small and are taking them off their helicopters.

For all their firepower, analysis of Somalia and Afghanistan showed that 7.62 cartridge does not have enough range to place the helo out of RPG range, the "new" GAU-16/XM218 .50cal (FN built new production version of the WWII AN/M3 .50 cal aircraft MG used by B-17's and B-24's) does.

The Browning beat out the GE .50 cal Gatling because, again after the experiences of Somalia and Afghanistan, Aviation now wants guns that work even after the helicopter has been shot down and lost power (though what would be wrong with just carrying a spare 24volt diesel battery in the cabin I don't know).

The Navy HAL squadrons use the GE .50 Gatlings in their Seahawks but they are the only US Military unit that I know does have them, the Saudi National Guard has .50 Gatlings on some of their Humvees too.

The problem with a 24v diesel battery is just a tad.. weight. Have you ever tried to lug one of those motherfuckers around? And let's not forget the ammo... to be sure, a properly trained gunner could make it last awhile, but if they're shot down or whatever, they'lll be screwed eventually.

The traditional Ma Deuce idea sounds good to me... not to mention that the .50 has some seriously long-ass range...
