That's what I thought too, except no beard.

And since visual evidence trumps dialogue, this clearly indicates that Sam's goatee is fake.

Yup, that's Sam/w forgotten Goatee. Or maybe he shaved it as a New Year's Resolution. But, if you go back a few days, you see him at the party wearing the same clothes.
