Pretty, but the design of the Devastator-class (and similar classes) bugs the hell out of me. Why even bother putting that gap in there in the first place? Docking? Any ship large enough to necessitate docking in between those mandibles could dock on the exterior of the ship, anyway. All it does is place unnecessary stress on those mandibles... and, if you needed to travel from the tip of one mandible to the other, you have to travel almost twice the overall length of the ship.

I argued the same things with a them when they first put it up. Their defense boils down to "we think it looks cool"SPOOFE wrote:Pretty, but the design of the Devastator-class (and similar classes) bugs the hell out of me. And how can you say it doesn't?Sea Skimmer wrote:I argued the same things with a them when they first put it up. Potentially there is another reason... The same reason we have catamarans and trimarans today, increased stability, possible there is some advantage to a twin hull design that allows for faster speeds or better performance somehow. I don't buy it, but hey, there you go.

I think it looks stupid. And if anything it should limit maneuverability and speed, the hull would not be nearly as strong.weemadando wrote:And how can you say it doesn't?Sea Skimmer wrote:I argued the same things with a them when they first put it up. Maybe if the Devastator-class had a hull all the way up to the very tip and then had a small gap with the tips it'd look both more powerful and still have a coolness factor. And maybe they could say those two tips are two mini-superlasers.

I dislike most fan designs because they do things that are not in the least bit practical for the sake of coolness. Coolness comes AFTER practicality.

The classic Generic Fanfic Uber-Starships. Look cool but have no real purpose.
And the Sovereign could use a little work. Judging by its profile and the typical form factor of Kuat ships, it should be wider; also, the command superstructure shouldn't be so damned rounded.

For what it's worth, coming from a guy with no experience in EU, I agree totally.Crayz9000 wrote:The classic Generic Fanfic Uber-Starships. Look cool but have no real purpose.

Heh. Well, its not as if all EU ships are bad; some of them fill in the gaps in the Imperial Navy's ship classes. Take, for example, the Allegiance-class, which fits the purpose of a light cruiser/heavy destroyer/destroyer-killer. Then there are a number of warships between 2 and 10 km, which fill the rest of the roles between the baseline Imperator-class and the Executor.Frank Hipper wrote:For what it's worth, coming from a guy with no experience in EU, I agree totally.
However, things like the Devastator and the Imperious make no sense. Why build a couple of newer, bigger ships if you already have three established *classes* that fit the bill? There is also a size tradeoff; for each increase in size, it means that you must make less of the larger ship class. Simple economics.
The Death Stars, of course, shouldn't be counted as warships. They are mobile siege platforms, whose sole purpose is to wade through any fleets they come across and destroy the target planet. It's generally not a good idea to make a warship imitate a siege platform.

That's a nice one. Got specifications to aid my theft and use of it in my fan fic?
