I'm thinking of switching from my current thread closed picture:

What do you think?

I think the second one is cleverer.

I was planning to make that second one if I ever became a mod.

I think the Arnie pic looks cool and indimidating, while Gandalf looks like he's straining to do a shit. Don't forget New Coke.

I prefer the TERMINATED pic myself. I think the Gandalf pic has too much empty space, and is simply not badass enough.

Gandalf is cleverer, but Arnie is just too overpowering.

Terminator one is better IMO, Gandalf just looks drugged.

Doesn't Dalton already have that Gandalf one with "you shall shut the fuck up!" as the caption?

Gandalf is funnier, but the Termie one has an air of authority. I say stick with the Termie.

From Gandalf's expression, you can tell someone's squeezing his testicles. I guess you should stay with Arnie.

I'd keep the Termie one though has more of an undenable kickass feel to it.

The Gandalf one is way cooler, imo.

The Gandlaf one is more clever, but the Termie just has a better game face honestly.

Why do people think the Gandalf one is cleverer? Both pictures do the same thing (ie take a line from their separate films, and change it slightly to be relevant for the bbs. "You're terminated!" to "This thread is TERMINATED." "You... shall not... pass!" to "You... shall not... post!" It's the same bloody thing).

I'm a fan of Arnold, myself. Gandalf looks senile, cranky, and stupid. Arnold looks beefy and mean.

Many things in our culture today are derivative works of other things. I can just relate more to the LotR than T1 - so I like the Gandalf one more. Why - does it bother you somehow?

Hardly. I was not commenting on 'which one is cooler' but responding to 'which one is cleverer'. I was curious what people meant. I wasn't even talking about your comments.

It's probably because it shows a close resemblence to the original line - for example, if the image was simply overlaid with 'this...thread is... locked' then it wouldnt work as well. Since the phrase lies very close to the original (changing only one word without altering the timing), then it appears to be a more intelligent caption then simply saying 'this thread is terminated'. Mind you, it's been years since I've seen the original Terminator, so I couldnt say whether the first was a specific reference to a line with specific timings.

That makes it sound like some sort of great masterwork of the age, but you get the drift.

As someone who loves puns and cheesy jokes, I rather like the second one too.

Sarah Connor says "You're terminated!" at the end of the first film. "This thread is terminated" sounds like a play of words as well.

It's a bit clumsier than the Gandalf one. As you say, the Gandalf one has a close resemblance to the original line. But so too does the Arnold one, just slightly weaker. The Arnold one could be changed to "You're terminated!" and that would be a direct line from the film; even though it was spoken by Sarah Connor.

I've always wonderered about that. Why exactly did the Terminator need a laser sight on his gun?

How about keeping them both and using one or another depending on the mood ?

The reason why the Gandalf one is cleverer is because it is more original. Most thread locked pics contain either the standard "Thread Locked" or some variation thereof ("This thread has been terminated," "the drunken Russki locks your threadski," etc). In which case the thread is the subject. However, the Gnadlaf pic has the poster as a subject, thus it is more clever.

I think it makes a much better banned pic, though.

Gandalf's expression just ruins the fun word play. I mean, I can't take him seriously in the picture. Like somebody else said, he looks like he's having a rough bowel movement, what with the one eye squinting and all.

Got to vote Arnold and the menace in this case.
