I think they were digitally colorized. Check the third post in the thread, by Steven:
No, HBN, you fool, they a original French archives which have been digitally colourised.

They're definately not actual colour photographs, rather digital.

The colour definition is off, like it's been colourised, and it doesn't really look at all like autochrome (actually, it looks a little like it, but it's still all wrong), the only available colour film process from 1907 until 1935, when Kodak introduced Kodachrome.

There was a show on the History Channel showing digtally colorized WWI footage. It was cool.

Further down the thread they mention the color images as having been taken by a French photographer who had his own rather expensive, high-quality color process-- T-something... I forgot the exact name though.
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.
