God, I don't remember the SFX being *that* bad...
Good movie, though, and a funky fighter.

The SFX were good for their time. Not up to the standards of Star Wars by any means, but not half as corny as the original Star Trek.

I just barely remember that movie, (I was probly 8 the last time they played it) If I'm not mistaken it's the one where the guy is an expert at a game on earth that is basicly the same flying a real ship like that, and it has 360 degree rotaition.

That ship was TOUGH as hell, and had some really sweet gunnery systems. Powerful, with 360 degree turrets, and a pilot/gunner configuration. The gunner had 360 swivel and a nice HUD, while the pilot sat above and behind, facing forwards. Really nice layout for a starfighter.

As I recall- doesn't the bad guy get away at the end?
SEQUEL!!!
Must watch that movie. But I REFUSE to watch it on VHS. I'd rather wait an eternity for the DVD.

They never made a sequel.
And never will.

Looks pretty good.
Stats?

None, although I can tell you this much:
It's fast, agile, VERY heavily armed w/missiles and laser cannons, has an FTL drive of indeterminate speed, and is built out of some kind of ultratough armor.

I don't think there are any. But she has multiple turrets capable of vaporizing opposing fighters with one shot, and essentially single-handedly ripped the enemy flagship apart with only one or two combat passes and a volley of missiles.
The hull allowed it to sit still for almost twenty seconds, as I recall, while a large portion of the enemy fleet bombarded it with fire.
And it contained a significant hold of missiles in addition to the main turrets.
Other than that, it's a blindingly fast ship. I wish I had the movie to confirm it, but I seem to recall it made galaxy-wide jumps in a matter of minutes.

THe movie also had one of the coolest bad-guy death sequences I remember.
Bad alien captain: "Guidance system out! Weapons systems out! We can't break free. We're being pulled in by the moon's gravitational pull. What do we do??"
Bad alien admiral, slowly closing his auto-monocle, and in a stern and serious voice: "We die."
BOOM.

Well, with a kick-ass death scene and a bad-ass fighter, it's a wonder it wasn't mroe popular.

The problem is that 3/4 of the movie was them hauling this trailer-park trash kid out of shithole, wisconsin, and trying to get him to single-handedly fight an interstellar war by virtue of being a really good video game player, thus satisfying the masturbatory dreams of every kid of the Nintendo generation.
Oh, yeah, and there was the 1/4 part involving kickass space battle.

Odd thing tho is that all those *other* starfighters got blown to kingdom come, didn't they? When the enemy managed to open the shield wide enough to fire a missile or somesuch at the base?

by Typhonis 1
they only managed to blow half the base up with guided asteroids. the last Gunstar was in a special hangar being worked on, and iot wasnt they droped the shileds it was because a Traitor blew up the CIDS controls

I remember now. They had to burn a hole through the shields to get the warship in.

It's available at Amazon.com for about 30 bucks. Pretty damn expensive though. Dvdpricesearch.com brings up a listing for about 25 bucks. Don't know about the company though.
