In roughly one hour, my school will be showing Dark Side of Oz, and I will be rocking, perhaps somewhat tipsy, to the music of Pink Floyd. This will be the third time I have seen this and I was hoping to get some opinions on it. Personally, I have never bought into the idea that is was entirely deliberate. For me, it has always been an example of a great coincidence in life.
Consider that the album came out in 1973 which is before the VCR and video became popular. Why is this important? Well, it means that the band would have to have access to a 35mm or a 16mm copy of the film as well as a projector and screen. It also means that the print would have to be perfect as any frames unspliced would through off any syncs they were planning. I am not %100 convinced that this could have happened. Of course, the band could have taken careful notes at a screening of Wizard of Oz, but generally, most theaters (besides student/college ones) do not rescreen older prints. Also, student theaters, like ours, tend to get prints that have frames missing from the film.
Also consider that most albums at this time were still being released on 45/12/LP. If you have seen the Dark Side of Oz, there are still cool coincidences past side one of the LP. Even the second play through, some interesting things line up. This is also important as the LP must be flipped over and restarted for the B side which takes time and would throw off a planned sync. I also doubt that the band imagined that their enterprising fans would own two LP turntables as well as a 16mm projector and a copy of the print and somehow come across this coincidence.
For me, it is more a cool coincidence and perhaps our minds looking for matchups than anything else but I want to see what others think! What is your general take on the performance? I was pretty blown away my first two times but we will see again after tonight.

For the record:

It's a coincidence, and a pretty weak one at that.
I'd only really go to Dark Side of the Rainbow just for the opertunity to hear Pink Floyd in a cinema.

I believe in a sign of Zeta.

"And besides, who cares if a monster destroys Australia?"
There are much better coincidences. I guess what makes the Dark Side of Oz thing so popular is the fact that A: it's Floyd, and B: it's a long "coincidence" (though, as Spanky said, a weak one).
That said... try timing Michael Jackson's Bad with the Ghostbuster theme, or Usher's Yeah Yeah with Britney's Toxic (the latter pair is actually listenable... as if their respective untalents cancelled each other out).

Thank you for the recommendations. I will have to try those then. It wasn't working for me tonight for some reason. Oh well. Damn the man.SPOOFE wrote: That said... try timing Michael Jackson's Bad with the Ghostbuster theme, or Usher's Yeah Yeah with Britney's Toxic (the latter pair is actually listenable... as if their respective untalents cancelled each other out).
The other one I have heard about is supposedly Tool's Opiate matching up with The Nightmare Before Christmas, at least for the first song.
