PNG, TGA and many other formats exists that keep the quality.
And JPG will not have necessarily decrease image quality. Every better 2D programm offers options to adjust quality by simply using a slider.

Some packages (such as Paint Shop Pro, and possibly some of the free ones) allow you to vary the compression quality of your JPEGs . . . choosing the right trade-off between file size and image quality. Another format to consider is PNG format, which features lossless image compression, which given your apparent application, might be a better choice than JPEG anyway.

Umm no, don't use TGA files for the web. A TGA (Truevision, Targa) file is uncompressed, just like a Windows bitmap.

what type of image program are you using? .jpg doesn't necessarily alter the quality, though it may fubar the color depending on your compression. alternatively, as someone else said png is a good format. given it's much more common than other alternate formatts, it might be a good choice.

I use Micro$oft Paint for most of my imaging stuff simply because I don't have anything better. And yes, it fucks up the quality. I've rejected several sig banners for this very reason. BTW, I'll try out .png and see how it works.

Depending on your color depth, GIF is also a good option. If you've only got a few (like, 16-256 colors) in your image, GIF compression is perfect because it reduces the color palette to just a binary power color range. Nothing will get you smaller images of equal quality when color depth is a non-issue.

I'd say that was a good test. Is that a spaceship I see?

EDIT: oops :)

I'd recommend .gif for that, but since you want a transparent BG, only .png supports that.

My inspiration comes from sci-fi,it may look like a Trek ship but i'll stay at a realistic B5 level.

Once i'm done with all the ships i'm drawing, they'll go on my free site, which odly doesn't accept PNGs :?

why not just use imageshack and simply link it on your free site?

Besides .gif and .png a whole bunch of other formats such as .tga or .tif support transparency.
