Stupid Photo/Scanner Malarkey

In my neverending quest for amusing pics, I need to scan some photos (one of me, apparently mid 'look I can turn my body into liquid' experience 
). I had a bit of a screw around, but they came out all grainy and shit. Does anyone have any tips? They're just ... well, regular photos. Shiny. I know nothing of chemical photography! 
Anyway, I need to give them back to Mandy's friend soon, so I need to scanzor them. Assist the creatively challenged!
