Some medium conversions here, mostly with bitz from a pack of Bretonnian Knights of the Realm and some general Marine bitz. The commander is made almost entirely from bitz, as the command squad kit I got comes with five guys. His horse and legs are Bretonnian (with Green Stuff added to flare out the boots, like a Marine's) with a shiny commander's front torso I had lying around and a generic back with a commander's backpack. Bretonnian lance and arm, Marine sergeant's "look over there" arm, commander's head, spare shiny pauldrons and a variety of bitz like his holstered bolt pistol.

The sarge didn't get a good shot, sadly, because he's one of my favorites. A Bretonnian head to make him look very patrician with a Marine wreathe on top, the company champion's sword arm and pauldron, and a diabolically-used bog-standard bolter arm holds the Bretonnian "storm shield." Champion's torso to give him the extra coolness I expect of my sergeants.

Plasma gunner was my prototype and is consequently a little lopsided. The helm caused more trouble than I expected, not only being difficult to position but also blocking his right pauldron and backpack pretty severely. Other than the Bretonnian helm and heraldic mini-shield on his ankle, he's pretty normal.

The champion I'm pretty apathetic toward. He came out well, but just doesn't quite do it for me. Standard champion's bolt pistol/combat shield arm with a Crux pauldron, a standard torso, an upgraded power fist for a weapon (I wanted the sergeant to have the super cool power sword) with the champion's other pauldron there. Simple Bretonnian helm, no fancy designs but much easier to work with. A hanging parchment from his belt rounds him out.

The apothecary I wanted to be pretty cool... they never get much attention, despite their overwhelming awesomeness. Another Bretonnian head for that imperious look, with a Bretonnian sword arm and shield tacked onto his reductor. Otherwise normal apothecary parts, posed for epicness.

Aaand the standard bearer. I had to glue a penny under his base because of the weight of the banner. I like this one, it came out well. A commander's power sword adds to the epic levels, some cloth on his belt, and a fancy eagle Bretonnian helm makes him pretty sweet.

The banner will probably look something like this when I'm done:

Hey, Brother-Captain, those are pretty damned sweet!

I think the Bretonnian helms really add a lot of character to those marines (even if that one guy can't turn his head). You did a really good job with the conversions.

I have a couple of questions, though. How did you make the banners/parchments/droopy cloths (I can't seem to get my clay to look that nice)? What did you use for the commander's halo? And when are you going to paint them?

They look pretty badass now, I can't wait to see them finished.

Thanks! :D

First of all, I can't. I tried. I'm terrible with Green Stuff. All the cloth and parchment is plastic, some from the command squad sprue, and most just accumulated over time in my Marine bitz-box. The iron halo is plastic as well, it comes with the commander box set and a few others. Also lying around in my bitz box. And finally, I'm painting them right now.

Chainmail (the metallic color) armor, white secondary with gold trim, some obligatory black (they are Angels of Death, after all), and then a smattering of detail color.

Would a horse be able to support a space marine on top of it?

Well, it's a Super Cybernetic Space Horse from the Future. And in game rules, I count it as bionics (the horse gets hit instead).

Smart. Not quite a Super Cyboar, but pretty damn cool none the less. What's his weapons loadout? The lance count as a power fist or some such?

Right now I've got the lance as a master-crafted power weapon, then I just tacked on a holstered bolt pistol. Add in artificer armor, an iron halo, and termie honors, voila.

Partially painted!

I still have a lot of details to do, as well as the banners and some heraldry, but the main colors are there. I'm not too pleased with the Shining Gold, it's just too bronzey for my taste, but sadly I don't have the Burnished Gold I'd prefer, which is a much lighter, "pure" gold.

A couple shots of (left to right) Nicholas, Alan, and Alexander (surnames are in the works... I have to make their homeworld first ;)). They came out well, though the camera still does not like close-up detail despite my coaxing, so faces, heads, etc. are still hard to see, including the damn wreathe.

Andrew and Archon William. Andrew is mostly done, though I'm still contemplating what color to use for William's horse's barding (can't use his colors of white and purple, wouldn't balance well).

And Nigel. None of his shots came out well and this was the best (I hate this camera). Also mostly done except for the Chapter heraldry which he'll feature prominently, in addition to his own which is done, color-wise (the white/blue).

Can you paint them other colors? maybe I could make my personal army of things in purple and silver... Those are really neat.

I know this is on a tangent, but I want to pick up a chaz and put it together. They might make good Dreadnaughts. They'd probably do better as tau battlesuits.

Purple r0x0rz as Mace Windu clearly demonstrates.

Not quite sure I follow you. Are you asking if one is 'allowed' to paint Space Marines different colors?

Mace Windu is clearly the scion of an abhorrent cult and must be purged.

Nice painting by the way.

What is a "chaz"?

Gaius,

If you don't like your gold color, you can always add some silver to the gold to lighten it up or drybrush some silver over it lightly. I find that gold with gold/silver highlights is about as shiny a gold as I could want.
If you're really feeling adventurous, you can try to glaze the gold with diluted yellow or blue ink (a technique I just recently discovered which worked really well over brazen brass, silver and boltgun metal).

Also, is your army white or are they just primed? I guess I would just worry about my marines--no way are they going to avoid stains on all-white power armor.

The white is mostly primer. I've since painted a fair bit of it, though my commander's barding is still unpainted and thus white. The Apothecary is the only real exception, like all specialists, they have color-coded power armor (Apothecaries are white, Librarians are blue, Chaplains are black, tech-adepts are red, etc.).

I did not know that...

Are there other color codes for, say, IG?

Well, like all 40k it's ultimately up to the painter. Codex: Space Marines, 4th Edition shows two styles; an all-black Chaplain with Chapter color/symbol on one pauldron, and a Chapter-colored Chaplain with a black pauldron.

As for Guard... they vary wildly. Their closest equivalent to the universal doctrine and organization of Marines' Codex Astartes is the Tactica Imperium, which is mostly strategy and tactics. Attached Tech-adepts are obviously going to be Adeptus Mechanicus red and Commissars tend to be black with red trim. Beyond that, it really depends on the regiment. For my Cadian 369th, everyone is in camouflage BDUs, and I mark medics with a red cross.
