Post by Darth RyanKCR »

Anybody remember Battle of the Planets? Or its orginal Gatchaman?

What do you think of my LEGO version of the ship from it?

Excellent work, I always loved Battle of the Planets as a sprog and it left an indelible impression on me. That's a nice rendition for Lego. As for myself, my ouevre is Lightwave-3D and I made a version some time ago that can be downloaded from my site...

I dont know about you, but I had a helluva time trying to get enough reference material together to make the model. The damn thing changes shape, size and colour in almost every picture of it that I could find!

Like many other Japanese anime machines, it changed size for dramatic effect. As for the color changes, that's something I can't explain :)

Still, it's a great job on her. I was also a tiny thing when I started watching "Battle of the Planets" (the butchered version with the robot host). I've been wanting to get copies of all the old Gatcheman and the newer OVAs

They've recently started re-releasing the entire original series uncut on DVD format, with nifty covers by Alex Ross, the guy that did the art for Kingdom Come. I picked up the first DVD awhile back, which has around ten eps on it. Not sure what volume they're up to now, but I'm fairly sure it's 5 or so.

Since it's uncut, I'd imagine so. Though admittedly I never got that far into the original show. :P

how about the little shit's sexual harrassment?

no just some things got removed from the american version, now of course after ESB I can easily see the sub plot having much less impact. If I Recall Correctly, there was even a censored episode where dad gets his son to switch sides, but he rejoins his friends....

Uncut means uncut, Bear.

All this talk got me drooling over the Phoenix, so for a laugh last night I set a little animation rendering of the Phoenix rising away from the ocean and blasting into the sky. With any luck it will be complete by the time I return home tonight and I can stick a link to it here. I've used a simple cel-shader to make it look like a toon, but I have no idea how it'll look on the move. Cant hurt to try though.

Never realised the uncut version was out on DVD, I thought it was just plain old BOTP with the annoying robot talking over the removed violence. I'll have to check Play.com for that.

Must. Find. NOW.

It's said to say, my first schoolgirl crushes were Starbuck from oBSG, Han Solo (because he fired FIRST, dammit!), and 'Jason' from BotP.

They're pretty cheap too. I think I picked up the first volume from Virgin for about $15.00.

Yeah, I think I recall that you didn't, but at least wanted to show you what you needed to look for.

Thanks hon! Turns out the FYE website has not just the Gatchaman collections, but the new OVAs and the old BotP volumes as well.

My little animation finally finished rendering and I finally got something to stich it together. Take note that I actually went so far as to have the wings drooping and then lifting during the takeoff, much as I remember the animation doing. Or it looked that way anyway...

http://www.fitbin.com/downloads/botp.avi - Divx6.1 avi 2.2Mbs

Just a quick animation by way of tribute to the first and best anime I saw as a kid. I dont remember ever building a Phoenix out of Lego, but given the amount of Lego I had back then I'm pretty sure I must have at some point. Ah, memories... I wish I had some.

The minute I downloaded and listened to the music for this animation I was back in 1980 watching this amazing space superhero epic with all sorts of INCREDIBLE machines and technology. It's amazing how evocative these things can be. I was also a little sad to see it's very hard to find fan sites now, they're all falling by the wayside.

Gatchaman? Is that the show with the five bird of prey themed heroes who fight a Cobra like evil organization led by a dude named Galactor? With the five heroes being a guy who spends inordinate amounts of time whining about his dad, a cyborg, a fat guy, a pretty girl, and some kid? And the whiny guy is the leader, and one can totally forgive to exessive whining because he has awsome mini bombs that come out of a pouch in his utility belt? And they each have a vehicle which for some stupid reason don't have any weapons, but when the vehicles are put toguether they can fire missles of Great Doom? Plus their ship turns into a fiery phoenix?

I loved that show! I saw it back when I was a kid in Venezuela (it was translated to Spanish). My friends and I always had a theory that Galactor was really a woman, something to do with the way the way the lower half of the face (the part not covered by the mask) seemed to be rather unmanly from the way it was drawn.

I also saw one episode of a show that seemed to be based on the same thing, exept the bad guys had a base on the moon or something, and the animation looked more modern. I disliked it instantly.

Should have seen that coming, what with the constant and incesant whining. Hell, the other characters chastized him about it in the dammed show.

In case anyone is wondering how the "Galactor is really a woman" theory sprung-up:

Image

In most pictures his lips look more normal, at least when taken by themselves. However, compare them against everyone else's mouth, and suddenly you realize that he really is wearing lipstick.

BTW - Since this is the artwork forum, this picture is awesome.
I wish I had made it, or had the ability make something similar.
