This past weekend I attended the MAAM Warbirds of WWII airshow. I really gotta thatk FSTargetDrone for a heads up about this event. Unfortunately this year there wasn't as much armor as I'd hoped for, but eh. Also the Bren gun carriers? American made to Canadian specs.

First off the biggest catch of the day, the rare Mk. V Avro Lancaster that showed this year.

Yankee Lady, a B-17 was also there:

Image

Two B-25 Mitchells were also there! Much to my joy one was -J (Briefing Time, the green one) with some mods and an early mod -H from the 5th Air Force:

Image

Carrier Aviation made a decent show this time around with two TBM Avengers:

The Marines responded with a Corsair to escort:

Image

Speaking of escorts, the USAAF brough along a P-40 Warhawk and a P-51 Mustang:

The wonderful thing about this airshow is that it had a corps of re-enacters from multiple armies of the time doing their thing. The Marine encampment had a 40mm Bofors AAA and a 37mm Anti-tank gun in emplacements.

Image

Image

They also did a flamethrower demonstration:

Image

The Soviets had a border checkpoint:

Image

The US Army had an M8 Greyhound Reccie Vehicle, and an example of mortars and machine-guns:

Finally, me holding guns :D

Me firing an M1919 .30 machine-gun!

And the highlight of my day, R. Lee Ermey:

Actually, that's a 251, not a 250.

Well done, sir. Great pictures.

I actually was able to attend, on Sunday. I had a wedding to attend and was away most of the weekend but on the way back I stopped by and was able to get pics too. Looks like you got hit with the rain. I didn't get to hang around very long, but I wanted to go, so I went.

You got the fire the .30 cal? Outstanding.

The flamethrower was most impressive. When they lit off the first burst I felt the heat halfway across the tarmac.

Did you go inside the Lancaster?

Didn't see any armor, but for the half tracks. Don't recall any armor there at all since 2003.

Also didn't get to meet Sgt. Ermey (damn lack of time!) but I did spy him handing a young boy a special colored coin from his pocket after the picture. The kid had a huge grin, ear to ear.

Some more Tuskeegee vets were again this year. Wanted to speak with them, but again, time was pressing.

NOS Guy, we should definitely try to link up next year, and that goes for anyone else who can get there, we should try to have a meet!

EDIT: Why weren't you with the French Partisans! You would've fit right in, from the looks of things!

EDIT: Removed my 3 pics. This is your thread afterall, and I shouldn't stick mine here!

Yeah actually.

I just got back a few shots from a guy whose kids I shepereded through the Lanc because he was too big. He took a few shots of me in the cockpit and I didn't even know until he e-mailed them to me (they're format destroying though). My luck :P

You mislead me with your original picture thread!

Actually a Philadelphia meet (in Reading?) wouldn't be too bad of an idea.

I got that all day and then some.

I don't particulary give a damn, feel free.

Sorry, sorry. :) Actually, I suppose the halftracks (did you see the German one on the far end of the field, by the "Storch"?) qualify as armor, but not since 2003 do I remember seeing the tank destroyers, SP howitzers and the like. I'll have to check pics from 2004 and 2005.

Was the .30 cal firing blanks, or were you actually able to shoot at a target? I heard some sporadic fire while I was there, but nothing like a burst from an mg. I was there just over 90 minutes. The g/f and I stopped by on that Sunday on the way back from the wedding out of state and I got her to agree to go to the airshow. But I didn't want to keep her there too long (I think the whole thing bored her to tears). I practically ran through getting pics when I could. Crowds seemed lighter than normal, but that was probably due to the rain. What day were you there?

The village assault display seemed to be in a different area this time, sort of in a low part of the field. Last year, unless you were at the edge of the "town" early, you couldn't see anything. Too many slack-jawed yokels in the way.

I finally got decent pictures of the P-40, walked right up to it. Last few years I've been unable to get anywhere as close.

Didn't see the P-47, BF-109 or the F4-F. The Lanc was beautiful, but I didn't get nearly the time near it I'd have liked. In 2004 they had a P-38, didn't see it this year, and I don't recall it listed in the program book. There was a Hurricane and Spitfire last year. Didn't see either this year.

Once again I couldn't get any autographs from the Tuskegee Airmen who were there--They were mobbed, as usual. Next year, hopefully.

The P-61 looked incredible. Few more years maybe and it should be largely complete. The first year I went there, back in the late 90's, it was pretty much just a fuselage.

I noticed Ermey's signature on a few of the vehicles, so that was cool. His jeep was driving around at one point, but he wasn't driving it.

It was firing blanks, though that was still an experience. Too bad it cost me bloody 20 bucks to fire off a strip, but eh.

Same here, though my girlfriend was hoped up on meds and in bed at home so I had the whole day on Saturday. The crowds were very light in the morning due to the rain (actually worked out well), but swelled as the day went on and the weather stablized.

Maybe it's just me but you couldn't see anything anyway, that it kinda annoyed me how the Americans didn't bring any squad support weapons except a BAR.

Hot damn, none of them were there this year. I almost feel cheated. :P

I look forward to when that's complete, I just wish I could've given more then the 5 I had on me :?

Hope it's there next year. I'd pay to fire it, considering how often I get to do such things, which is never.

Hm, they were all listed in the program guide, but perhaps there were no-shows due to the weather. A Russian Yak-9 was also there there in 2004 and 2005.

In 2004 or 2005, the P-51B that was to attend never arrived. It was destroyed in a crash, and I believe the pilot was killed.

I'm really hoping they bring back the armor next year. In 2003, they were all parked in the same area, and evidently took part in a parade. I never saw any of the tracked vehicles driving around, which I would have really enjoyed. The program from 2003 mentions some armor being there in 2002, so it wasn't just a one-shot appearance. But this year and last, some of the halftracks were moving around, so that was something.

A. that would be awsome. Around the same as when I saw a Blunderbuss being fired.
B. I would have loved to see the flamethrower.
C. who is R. Eremy? (please don't kill me!)

Like three posts up dude.

LURK MOAR :P

Upon further recollection I wonder just how awesome it would be if one of the L-5 Cubs had a mock dogfight with the Storch.

.45 Caliber pistol FTW.

R. Lee Ermey is an actor and former Marine drill instructor. Off the top of my head, he played Gunnery Sgt. Hartman (the drill instructor) in Full Metal Jacket, the green army man Sarge in both Toy Story films, Sherriff Hoyt in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, the police captain in Se7en, and is the host of Mail Call on the History Channel, arguably the best show on that network. He also has the distinction of being the first retiree in the history of the Marines to be promoted, when he received an honorary promotion to Gunnery Sgt.

Hell naw! That was Gary Busey IIRC. Ermey would've been too much a by-the-book version of Zim for Verhoven... and he'd have traumatized pretty-boy Rico, too :P

Eh? Gary Busey wasn't in Starship Troopers at all- his son, Nick Busey, was, but as Ace, Rico's friend.
