This is one of the kinds of things you might find if you're wandering around here at night. I did anyway and took some pictures.

This is how I found them. Actually, I first found their slimy rope, which I wondered what the the hell it was. So I touched it and it felt... icky.
Image

A close-up of the two fuckers (heh heh).
Image

Their blue dick-thingys underwent a freaky change after a while. They turned into some kind of flat thing with a bag or sack or something below. Here is the flat part.
Image

Here is the sack.

Image

Now they are apparently finished and start retracting their things.
Image

More retracting. It looked like it came from their breathing holes on their sides, but that seems extraordinarily weird.
Image

They're done now.
Image

They dropped from the slimy rope and went on their way.

I assume these things normally hang from trees and the like. Now wouldn't that be an experience, getting these things in your face when you're out walking in the woods during the evening

Nothing 10,000 tons of metaldehyde couldn't fix.

What about just ordinary table salt? It works on leeches.

Table salt makes their skin peel off. I've tried it.

Slugs: nature's best lovers. Their entire body is mucus membrane.

Boy look at that intelligent design at work. God must've been stoned when he came up with those things.

Escargo is a slug with a job; he can afford a mobile home.

Imagine the cruel twist of ironic fate if they had been at a farm, and gettin' it on suspended from some fencepost, slowly lowering themselves and their newly created sac of younglings slowly, lower, down onto a salt lick.

Heeheehee.

Ah these things were on a David Attenborough doco. The national radio stations got all kinds of people ringing up saying it was disgusting, that it was pornographic (WTF? what kind of porn do these people watch?). I think it's weird but just shows how totally awesome nature can be.

I recall watching that David Attenborough documentary, it was pretty interesting, especially since you don't usually think of slugs as particularly sensuous creatures, but they are when they have sex. They probe one another with their penises, suspended together, away from the world, all they can feel is one another. It's quite sweet, really, even if physically they are repellant to animals like us.

Not bad, you need to work on focusing the Auto Focus, the third picture has the focus on the background.

Odd, I always thought that Slugs were asexual like Snails, guess I was wrong...

Yeah, this wasn't exactly ideal conditions. It was impossible to even see them in the view because of the darkness, much less set the focus...

Meh, I don't mind them. And killing a couple that's busy having sex upside down on a ninja rope, that's just mean :P

As long as there's NaCl or something else in it that can trigger the osmosis. The same thing happens to freshwater fish when you put them in salt water (and doing the reverse with salt water fish leads to slightly more... interesting results. Don't try any of this though, it ain't right).

What's the chemistry? The salt just causes the mucus to dry out and dehydrate the slug? How do you know all this, anyway?

Create a higher salt concentration on the outside of the slug, resulting in H2O moving out of the slug to the outside to reach a balance. Since slugs are squishy, you probably get alot of out of it. As for the fish, the salt water fish being put in freshwater is going to cause it to balloon up. No clue if it'll actually rupture.

Surlethe wrote:What's the chemistry? The salt just causes the mucus to dry out and dehydrate the slug?
Well yes, dehydration is an effect of it. Like Tasoth said, the higher concentration of salt outside the cell membranes will force water out of the cells. This is because the cell membranes are permeable to the water but not the salt. Since the salt solution has a higher solvent potential, this will create a pressure gradient across the membrane, which will cause water to flow out until the balance has been restored. In the case of salt water fish, the reverse happens; water flows into the cells. Enough swelling can cause blood vessels and other things to rupture, and it ain't gonna be pretty...
How do you know all this, anyway?
I have awesome science teachers 8)
(And I also conducted "experiments" on leeches, but that's okay because leeches are evil)

Snail Orgy, filmed by a bored friend of mine in his back garden last night.
