Slightly bigger screen, MUCH BIGGER (30-80GB) hard drive/flash-memory/whatever-the-hell-they-use-these-days.

Longer battery life. Up to 20 hours of music and 6.5 hours of video playback. What is a fucking ripoff is the iTunes store. You can download full movies for $12.99. What the fuck!? That is almost the price of the DVD version!

Ein: Yeah, I already knew about the "new" iPod redesign back when it was first announced. Kind of hard to miss.

That's it? Oh wow, roll out the red carpet.

What's with the iPod hate? You do know it's not a Microsoft product, don't you?

I have a Sony minidisc player.
Really though, I don't give a shit either way about iPods (though I personally have no desire to ever own one). Just that "OMG, longer lasting battery!!" seems rather anti-climactic for the announcement of a new device.

Until movies downloads are available within 30 seconds, I'll stick to my DVDs. I'm certainly not paying $13 just to watch it on a small screen. It's neat and all, but I like my movies on a big screen.
And I'll never buy another iPod again until they fix the "scratches if you touch it" issue. It's a nice piece of hardware with an intuitive design, but waaaay too easily scratched.

Yeah, Apple are so much nicer than Microsoft, it's not like they're out to make money or anything. In fact it's like a big workers collective!
Apple screw people as much as any big business. The iPod does the same as other players but costs far more and tries to force you into an exclusive contract with Apple to provide you with all the content as well. It's a lovely looking bit of kit, but I dont want the hidden contract and the price is way too much.

Um.. That's $12.99 for pre-orders and the first week of the film's release. $9.99 after that.

If it does show up as a removable drive, there's no stopping me from filling it to the brim with my own preexisting MP3s, provided the thing doesn't DRM-encode them on the fly as they're loaded onto it to prevent copying back to a new hard drive

$10 or $13, unless there is a huge increases in my download speed, I'm still not downloading movies. I've bought a few episodes of Lost and nBSG off of iTunes, and even the wait for that is irritating.
And the Lost episode downloads are not in the widescreen like they are on the DVDs or TV broadcasts, so nuts to doing that ever again.
That, and the video quality sucks watching it on fullscreen computer monitor.

I feel for you, trapped in 90s gadget town. One day you might actually get an interactive xml playlist on that, and enter the 21st century! lol ps minidisk sucks am i rite?
By the way, what is Ein talking about? I've only used 4G and later iPods, and they show up as drives just fine. The problem is the xml playlist iPods use, and just dropping files in won't actually be usable by the iPod itself. For all the people that hate iTunes for some reason there are plenty of low-footprint opensource alternatives.
What is this 'exclusive contract' shit? Sorry, I put *my* movies on my iPod. Why the fuck would I buy one from Apple? I own it already. Since all I use iTunes for is music management and getting the podcasts Apple hosts for free, I'm not going to complain about them daring to try to sell me stuff.
EDIT - holy shit, someone bought an episode of LOST for iPods (fucking madness, by the way) and it's not in widescreen? What did you expect? The iPod isn't widescreen!
Ironically, iPods don't load DRM on anything ever... but MD players do. SPANKY LOSES AGAIN. ATRAC3 baby. Remember to check in your songs!

Don't feel bad, I actively sought it out three years ago because I specifically wanted one.
Besides, I'm not some Linux pinko anarchy faggot, so I don't really care about the whole ATRAC3 thing.

You had a need to be substandard? Backward? Behind-the-times? Constantly replace media? Suffer mechanical failure? Whore to Sony? Use the shocking software?
My sister has one... I mean jesus. Years ago MAYBE, but I just can't imaginate a reason to use one now. Unless.... you're a poser. POSEUR! That's it!

I'll stick with my Sony Bean, thanks. Not only is it handy, ergonomic, and cheap, it's also motherfucking adorable

For a second I read that as 'Sean Bean', and I was all 'holy crap does Sean Bean play music now'.
Interestingly, while I hear lots of bitching about iPod price, all the alternatives in AU are approximately the same price. Smaller chip-based systems are significantly cheaper, but they're also more hit-and-miss product wise. I understand why people buy iPods here.

In the past I think it was a more reliable ground rule but I've tended to notice that too in passing shopping for new MP3 players.
The iPod's an undeniable quality product, but for me, I have 2 very servicable players already and it'd be hard to justify an iPod. 80 gigs is mighty impressive though, you could put both music and video en masse onto that thing.
[and playing iPod video on a computer screen is tiny cause the iPod video size is 320x240 ish. Least that's what this porn site says] And really, that'd be the single biggest thing i'd fill a video iPod with, so maybe it'd be a nice investment for Iraq.

Yah, that's why people who buy specific 'iPod versions' of video media are crazy. Get the dvd, shrink it. Don't get the low-quality 'for shit tiny monitor' versions.
One advantage iPods have over the chipdrive market is solidity: if you're looking for an SD-MP3 player (for instance) you have literally thousands of options, dozens from each manufacturer. For an average consumer, that's pretty overwhelming, particularly since most of them have zero marketing and appear to be almost exactly the same. I've seen some very nice chipdrives, but people have referred me to them. I'd hate to venture into that market uninformed.
Since the 80Gb version is out, I might finally upgrade my 20Gb G4 iPod. I can't deny how cool it is to have album art on a media player: it's a tiny, useless thing, but it helps.

*face melts*
That's it, I'm going to check AUian prices for this shit. I've got people clamoring to buy my old iPod, so I might as well. LOL!
