Trek 11's Deleted Scenes
I finally got the DVD today, and as usual the first thing I watched was the deleted scenes, and then again with commentary. To save everyone the effort, here they are:
The first deleted scene features Spock's birth. It's pretty unremarkable, and I can understand why it was cut. It seems the whole point of the scene was to establish that Spock is half human.
The second features the Klingons finding the Narada. You don't see the Klingons, just their voice across the Narada comm system. It doesn't say when it happens, relative to the other events. However, the deleted scene commentary reveals that it happens shortly after the Kelvin collides with it. The incredibly cool thing about this scene is that the Klingons are speaking Klingon, and the Romulans are speaking what would probably be Romulan, but it's very hard to discern.
The third one is one of the most well, in that it features Jim, his brother George and his running away. You see George complaining that Jim is always following orders and doing things right. This subsequently inspires Jim to steal the car. This scene and the first one were cut because the it was felt that they were too obviously there to set things up.
The fourth one features Sarek and Amanda fighting after Spock's fight at school. There's not a lot there, just showing that Amanda has emotions and Sarek's a Vulcan.
The fifth one is set on Rura Penthe, and feature's Nero's escape. Basically, the guards have deciphered a bit of Nero's back story, and they want more information, and they're prepared to use the Centaurian slugs to get it. Nero subsequently escapes. At no point do you see Klingons beneath some odd helmets. The helmets have ridges, but there's no indication of what's underneath. Also, they're all wearing some nice long jackets, and carrying big fucking guns. The Klingon interrogating Nero speaks English, and doesn't have the weird "speaking through the teeth" accent that became prevalent later on.
The sixth one is during the attack on Vulcan. Amanda's seeing the drilling from the Narada, and then Sarek rides up on his swoop bike to retrieve her and find shelter. That's basically it.
The seventh features Kirk and Gaila in an alternate version of the bedroom scene. The only meaning difference is that now Uhura has heard a transmission of a prison escape as opposed to the ships blowing up. Kirk says to Gaila that "tomorrow at three" he will send her a special note about his feelings. Then we see the Kobayashi Maru scene as per normal. When the Klingon ships appear and start firing, we then see Gaila work backstage at the KM test. She goes to open her email, where she finds and opens a message from Jim. It simply says "I'm sorry." At the bottom of the screen, you see that he's basically put a program in the message that enabled his cheating. According to the commentary, this was deleted because they decided that less is more with regards to how he beats the test.
The eighth is a bit of comic relief after the destruction of Vulcan. Basically as Jim walks through the halls, he sees Gaila and apologises to her. Except it's not Gaila. That's it.
The last one is just a shot, set just after Spock talks to Spock. Old Spock is walking away, and Sarek glimpses him. Not a lot there, but I could see why it was cut.

Also, the DVDs look exactly like the TOS DVDS.
It's a nice little touch.

Re: Trek 11's Deleted Scenes
This scene should have been in the movie to explain why Kirk stole the car instead of him being shown as just doing it. With this scene one could argue that nuKirk wanted to be accepted by his brother by doing something that is against the rules FOR THE FIRST TIME. (is this George Kirk younger than Jim or a stepbrother?)Gandalf wrote:The third one is one of the most well, in that it features Jim, his brother George and his running away. This would have explained a lot about how nuKirk got to manipulate the KM simulator - by using one of his strength: wooing women. Again why not show that he knows his strengths?Gandalf wrote: The seventh features Kirk and Gaila in an alternate version of the bedroom scene. Though his whole behaviour during the test would still be that of a moron. (not Morn, he's cool)

Re: Trek 11's Deleted Scenes
This must be Diora Baird's role. Before the movie there must have been half a dozen sites that reported that Rachel Nichols and her would play Orions. But there was only Gaila onscreen.Gandalf wrote: The eighth is a bit of comic relief after the destruction of Vulcan. Basically as Jim walks through the halls, he sees Gaila and apologises to her. Biological older brother, same as his TOS incarnation.tezunegari wrote:This scene should have been in the movie to explain why Kirk stole the car instead of him being shown as just doing it. In the novelization I believe he was rather bitter given how his parents were always away in space, how his father died and hated his stepfather for, among other things, intenting to sell the car that Jim would steal as it was originally George Sr.'s.

Re: Trek 11's Deleted Scenes
Which is funny because Diora Baird did a shoot for either Ralph or FHM that was published(in AU) around the same time as the movie came out. She was bragging up how she didn't know what Trek was and didn't care, it was just a bit role for the resume. Good work on that one!Old Plympto wrote:This must be Diora Baird's role. Re: Trek 11's Deleted Scenes
I saw a couple of the deleted scenes. The "Kirk's brother" scene is probably better left out. His behavior is better explained by not having a father rather than undergoing a complete character transformation due to his brother running away.

I just want to say that the Klingon guards on Rura Penthe walking around with literal burning torches has got to be the stupidest contrivance ever seen in a science fiction movie.

Yeah. At least in STVI they carried plastic ones, right?

You'd think, but it's light and heat on the cheap, and if somebody gets uppity smacking them with a flaming stick is both effective and entertaining.Vympel wrote:I just want to say that the Klingon guards on Rura Penthe walking around with literal burning torches has got to be the stupidest contrivance ever seen in a science fiction movie.

And if the torch nears something flammable like another guard? And the smoke is going to be a royal pain.

I thought they were flamethrowes. Are they relly just torches?
