I can agree that Generations was the most "in character" and had the right tone in what a TNG movie should be like, but its execution was fluffed, Generations pissed a lot of hardcore fans off, getting mixed reviews from the general audience and critics (UK television magazine, The Radio Times, gave Generations a four star rating). They changed the tone for First Contact, changing the DNA for TNG, ultimately for the worst in the last two TNG movies, but it was critically and financially more successful. I wouldn't say First Contact was a cast iron film, but it took few less liberties and had less holes in it than the more successful Abrams' Star Trek, I still think First Contact is arguably the best Star Trek movie in the last 18 years (admittedly that's not hard to do).Stofsk wrote:Preferring Generations over the other TNG films is one thing; I happen to think of the four, Generations is the best. First Contact loses points with me by horribly retconning the Borg, and if you get past the horrible execution, the themes of the film are actually very good like Skylon says. Insurrection and Nemesis were wastes of film.
Here's my personal review breakdown for the past five Star Trek movies:
Star Trek: Generations (1994) - 4/10
Star Trek: First Contact (1996) - 8/10
Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) - 2/10
Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) - 3/10
Star Trek (2009) - 7/10
