Part two is up now as well.

As a positive review, this will probably not stimulate as much discussion as some other reviews. My only difference in opinion is that I found the scenes where Sisko is being interrogated by the prophets slightly tedious. I think there should have been a way to condense them a bit, even though I have no objections to the basic idea.

I can't wait for Duet. It was my all-time favourite episode.

Supposedly 39 of the 40 ships were destroyed, though we only have confirmation of 16 kills. It's possible that two or three ships weren't completely destroyed, but were heavily damaged, disengaged, and limped back to collect survivors, and then limped or were towed back to the nearest base to be written off as a complete loss or salvaged for parts.

Imagine if a ship suffered damage like the Saratoga, but was able to eject it's warp core. Then collected some pods and limped away on impulse. Other Federation (including civilian) and Klingon ships no doubt could have assisted as well.

Also, the number of survivors from the destroyed ships couldn't have been too great given the speed and ferociousness of the attack and the damage inflicted on most of the ships. I think the Saratoga got off light (being damaged and left to go boom) considering what happened to ships like the Melbourne.

Presumably some transports could be diverted to pick up survivors easily enough.

There seem to be a few getting about the Federation, so I could see them diverting a few for such an operation.

Bleh. As I'm hard of hearing, it's hard for me to understand what Chuck's saying at times, even if I press my headphones closely to my ear.

But from what I did hear, it was an excellent review, and reminded me it's been a long, long time since I last saw this pilot.

If only they actually did DS9 reruns. :|

TNG/DS9 reruns are evil. If you have to show them at all you have to do so at 0300 or thereabouts where hopefully very few people will be watching to begin with.
I'm not kidding. German TV is perfectly happy to show VOY/ENT in afternoon/early evening slots but TOS/TNG/DS9, if it gets reaired at all, ends up in the middle of the night time slots.

'Tactically we have multiple objectives. So we need to split into teams.'-'Dibs on the Amazon!'
'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'
'You know, for a guy with like 50 different kinds of vision, you sure are blind.'

At least recently, BBC America was showing reruns of TNG. For some reason I found that rather amusing.

I just finished watching the first 3 episodes of DS9 on DVD tonight.

Emissary is good.

Then there's an episode about Odo where the station's rabble are convinced that the resident shapeshifter is a murderer. It was okay.

I liked the 3rd episode. It was a Kira centric episode and dealt with Bajoran politics. Some Bajorans want all non-Bajorans off Bajor and out of their business and they are willing to usethe same tactics they used against the Cardasians to make it happen. The episode also introduces Garrack and begins his relationship with Dr. Bashir in an interesting and amusing way.

That's because they paid more for the broadcasting rights of the newer shows, so they want to give them better time slots. I am somewhat surprised that this still applies to the VOY, but it's nevertheless the likely explanation.

Broadcasting rights of ST series have traditionally been fairly expensive, which is why DS9, VOY and ENT have never been shown on free (or national) channels for example in Finland. There just aren't enough fatty nerds in small countries like Finland for the channels to pay for the rights. This of course does not apply to Germany, but I'm sure the costs are still involved when deciding the time slots.

I'm tempted to name my character "Don't Fuck With The" Sheppard for my punch people in the faceRenegade Mass Effect playthrough.

I really can't get enough of Chuck's comments on how awesome Sisko is, they crack me up every time.

And I'm sad I didn't stick with DS9 enough back in the day. I got to see most of the first two seasons, and then caught loose episodes here and there, which is a shame seeing how it improved drastically.

At least I saw Trials and Tribble-ations, my favorite time-travel ST episode OF ALL TIME.

The Sisko can be annoying sometimes, but he is a lot closer to The Kirk than any of the other captains

Another great review, Waiting with crossed fingers to see "Duet" when he gets to it :D

I always assumed the Enterprise was the 40th ship that survived. The Enterprise was meant to be part of that fleet (of a total of 40 ships) and was late to the scene due to their warp drive being burned out after the firing of the navigational deflector.

The Enterprise survived the encounter so as I say, I always took that to be the one ship that survived.

Emissary did make a mistake, though, in having survivors. When the Enterprise arrived on the scene, there was some dialogue which from memory went:

Data: No active subspace fields. Negligable (sp?) power readings.

Riker: Life signs?

Data: [shakes his head]

Considering how little it takes to fuck up their sensors, this is at best a minor nitpick.

Also no life signs in the wreckage field doesn't mean much if all the escape pods have already rocketed away.
