You can't say ST characters are idiots and then turn around and argue that ST characters would not do something because it was a stupid thing to do.

You confuse refinement with genuine innovation, and new terminology with legitimate invention. A mechanic from 10 years ago wouldn't have a clue what to do with a modern engine, but it doesn't mean that the new engine is really that much different.
