TOS Recommendations

Post by Eternal_Freedom »

I recently acquired the complete Original Series on DVD. I plan on watching them all in due course, but I would like to ask for recommendations on which ones ot watch as a priority.
Baltar: "I don't want to miss a moment of the last Battlestar's destruction!"
Centurion: "Sir, I really think you should look at the other Battlestar."
Baltar: "What are you babbling about other...it's impossible!"
Centurion: "No. It is a Battlestar."

Corrax Entry 7:17: So you walk eternally through the shadow realms, standing against evil where all others falter. May your thirst for retribution never quench, may the blood on your sword never dry, and may we never need you again.

Do you mean which ones are our favorites? Ones that we think are well-written?

I ask for your recommendations on which ones to watch first. You may interpret that as you wish.

This is not a complete list and by no means complete, but I think this covers most of the awesomeness of TOS while avoiding most of the crap.

The Naked Time 1x06 - Sulu running around without a shirt wielding a sword. Hilarious.
Balance of Terror 1x08 - First appearance of the Romulans.
The Conscious of the King 1x12 - Kirk deals with a mass murderer from his own childhood.
The Menagerie 1x15 - Captain Pike and the Morse code chair.
Arena 1x19 - Kirk fights the Gorn.
Tomorrow is Yesterday 1x21 - First use of the Slingshot time machine to go back to 1969.
Space Seed 1x24 - Introduction of Khan
The Devil in the Dark 1x26 - I'm a doctor, not a bricklayer.
Errand of Mercy 1x27 - The Organians force peace between the Federation and Klingons
The City on the Edge of Forever 1x28 - Kirk goes back in time and must let a woman die to restore the Federation
Amok Time 2x01 - Spock undergoes the pon farr and fights Kirk to the death
The Doomsday Machine 2x06 - The Enterprise must stop an unstoppable weapon from destroying the galaxy.
Wolf in the Fold 2x07 - Piglet is Jack the Ripper and plants evidence that Scotty is a woman killer.
Mirror, Mirror 2x10 - Kirk and crew get beamed up and end up in the mirror universe
The Trouble with Tribbles 2x13 - Kirk and crew must save grain from Klingon sabotage and pet little furrballs.
A Private Little War 2x16 - Kirk and crew provide guns to primitive natives to kill Klingons.
The Ultimate Computer 2x24 - The M5 computer is installed on Enterprise and kicks some serious ass!
Spectre of the Gun 3x01 - Kirk and crew get into a shootout at the OK Corral
The Enterprise Incident 3x04 - Kirk arranges to steal a Romulan cloaking device
The Tholian Web 3x09 - Kirk disappears trying to save the Defiant and then the Enterprise comes under attack.
The Way to Eden 3x20 - Space hippies get taken to Eden and die horrible deaths.
All Our Yesterdays 3x23 - Kirk, Spock and McCoy get sent to the past and Spock ends up with a hot cave woman.

What he said.

I also like Elaan of Troyius, though everyone seems to hate that episode. The battle with the Klingons and Elaan is sexy. :)

Just watch the show from beginning to end. Not every episode is good, but there are generally only one or two episodes per season that are best avoided. Despite this, if you've never watched the show before I really think you should just pop in the first DVD and watch from the start.

I've watched some episodes before, most of the ones on Baffalo's list.

Ah sod it, I'll just start from the start. "The Cage" here I come.

Centurion: "Sir, I really think you should look at the other Battlestar."

Try this. I asked this question before on HPCA/SDN and got this spread of episodes:

Best of TOS

The big problem I had, was that even then, there was so much...derivativeness back then...you had theme planet episodes based off cultural contamination occuring more than once in a single season; e.g. “A Piece of the Action” and “Patterns of Force”.

I find a very good episode of the TOS is the Patterns of Force (2x50) where the crew of the Enterprise visits a planet dominated by a "Naziesque" regime.

lol that is the worst episode of TOS ever.

EDIT I exaggerate but it's pretty bad. Only the hippy episode is completely unwatchable.

I said that it was a good episode, not the best ever but you a correct the one with the space hippies is worst then space Nazis , if they had an episode combining them it would be an improvement.

No love for "The Omega Glory"? It totally blows "City on the Edge of Forever" out of the water.
