What's to explain? That WAS Cochrane. But they decided to ignore that in FC, and turn the "father of warp drive" into fucking Al Bundy. Matter of fact, the rumor mill said that Cochrane in FC was going to be female....Darth Fanboy wrote:So im watching TOS today, in fact the ep is still airing. So even the TNG movie that didn't completely suck has huge gaping fuckflaws in it?

Yup, but not just a female, but also a love interest for Picard.Lord Poe wrote:Matter of fact, the rumor mill said that Cochrane in FC was going to be female....
Yet another brilliant idea from Brannon "Im proud that I have never seen the original series" Braga.
When a fan pointed out that Cochrane was a man, he angrily replied: "Who the fuck cares."

Actually, they did point out that he became lost in space in Ent. First time they tried to not screw up all things canon. Pity they failed.

I read somewhere that the Entity made Cochrane younger to restore him to health.Lord Poe wrote:What's to explain? That WAS Cochrane. The Story goes that sometime after First Contact Cochrane goes missing (this was the story for TOS, theres nothing to contradict it in FC and its even mentiond in Enterprise when Archer thinks a body they find in a craft might be him (its not him though))
He goes missing in a small craft of his in space and basically he ends up on this planet where an entity falls in love with him and makes him look younger. until finnally Kirk and his crew find him.
Theres no continuity errors at all. They just used a diffrent actor. nothing wrong with that

Even the stuff about Montana has been screwed up post FC (I guess to make Braga happy.) Pretty much everything press-wise that came out pre-release on FIRST CONTACT specified that the action was taking place in Resurrection, Montana. (This was originally a tie-in with the working title of STAR TREK RESURRECTION, which went south due to ALIEN IV.) I've seen Resurrection Montana cited in magazine articles (American Cinematographer for one, and I think I referenced it myself in my Cinefex article) that appeared AFTER the film came out as well, since the name of the town is not in the final cut and so wasn't contradicted at that point.
But apparently when Enterprise comes along, Braga decides to retcon the first contact town to his home of Bozeman, which I guess also somewhat legitimizes why he had a starship named after the town fron NextGen days, but still flies in the face of what they themselves were establishing while making FC.
As for the Cochrane thing, folks who are delusional enough to believe that the FC Cochrane 'evolved' into the TOS Cochrane are not going to be swayed by logic, so let 'em keep their fantasy. IMO, the FC Cochrane has got precious little to do with what has been established, and carries no weight or significance for me in the slightest.
I'd say the same for FC overall ... great shots of the PHOENIX taking off and separating, some nice spacewalk shots, but nothing much else to give a hoot about. The idea that they didn't deal with the postnuke environment really pissed me off, and still does. One shuttle flight down to earth over a ravaged landscape could have visually conveyed just how far we had to pull ourselves up to get going again, but hey, that is putting events into a GENUINE context, which is probably beyond the way these folks think when writing these things. I understand the notion of KeepItSimpleStupid, but they seem more intent on doing it as KeepingItStupidlySimple.

Actually I was referring to the notion of FC having "gaping flaws". What of the shitty battle? What of the Borg being completely out of character, especially with regard to the "queen"? What of the whole "we can't use transporters or forcefields but we can sure as hell play on the holodeck" bullshit? Or the stupidity of the whole "sphere in the cube" design? Dare I mention the insanity of the Borg plot, which by preventing the Federation from forming also prevents the development of all the Federation's technology that sparked Borg interest in the Federation in the first place? Surely they can't be so desperate for humans to assimilate, because that a) relegates them to fucking ZOMBIES, and b) fucks over the whole notion that the Borg procreate as shown in "Q Who?"
FC is a badly flawed movie even disregarding the TOS -> FC continuity problems.

It was not a bad idea, and the Borg probably figured that the Federation was more trouble than they were worth.Uraniun235 wrote:Actually I was referring to the notion of FC having "gaping flaws". Why didn't they use the shuttles transporters to beam in one man to engineering, shoot the plasma tanks then beams out, killing all the Borg in one swift move. It would take less then five seconds.
No of course not because that would make sense to B&B, they don't want it to make sense. How stupid of me.

Well, don't we see the queen activate a forcefield blocking data from escaping? She did that fairly quickly, and that was in a situation when there wasnt a lot of danger to the core. If someone actually beamed in, they could probably have a forcefield round them before they could even target the core.
One possibility, at least...

Yes but the crew would not know the queens existance or her abilities. And I wonder why they didn't brought the option up in the first place?The_Lumberjack wrote:Well, don't we see the queen activate a forcefield blocking data from escaping? Actually, IIRC they covered that; they said they couldn't get to a shuttlecraft.Dark Primus wrote:Why didn't they use the shuttles transporters to beam in one man to engineering, shoot the plasma tanks then beams out, killing all the Borg in one swift move. It would take less then five seconds.
