Star Trek Encyclopedia
I was wondering if anyone had a copy of The Stak Trek Encyclopedia - A Reference Guide to the Future handy and could look up the warp scale towards the back of the book for the USS Enterprise D. It specifies warp one as the speed of light, and and new maximum speeds as well as giving travel times from one place to another. It also gives speeds in kilometers per hour and number of times the speed of light you are traveling. Any help would be appreciated - you can reply here or just pm me. Thanks

That's a tall order, but here goes:
SPEED---------KPH-------multiples of c---Earth to moon--Across Sol system
-----------------------------(300,000 KPS)----(400,000 Km)----(12 mil. KM)
Warp 1---------1 billion-----1----------------1.34 sec.---------11 hours
Warp 2---------11 billion----10--------------0.13 sec.---------1 hour
Warp 3---------42 billion----39--------------0.03 sec.---------17 minutes
Warp 4---------109 billion--102-------------0.01 sec.----------7 minutes
Warp 5---------229 billion--214-------------0.0063 sec.-------3 minutes
Warp 6---------421 billion--392-------------0.0034 sec.-------2 minutes
Warp 7---------703 billion--656-------------0.0021 sec.-------1 minute
Warp 8---------1.1 trillion--1,024-----------0.0013 sec.-------39 sec.
Warp 9---------1.62 trillion-1,516-----------0.00089 sec.-----26 sec.
Warp 9.2-------1.77 trillion-1,649-----------0.00082 sec.-----24 sec.
Warp 9.6-------2.05 trillion-1,909-----------0.00070 sec.-----20 sec.
Warp 9.9-------3.27 trillion-3,053-----------0.00044 sec.-----13 sec.
Warp 9.99------8.48 trillion-7,912----------0.00017 sec.------5 sec.
Warp 9.9999---214 trillion--199,516--------0.000007 sec.----0.2 sec.
The actual chart gives qute a bit more, but this was getting too big. I think you can figure out any distance you need, one sector is 20 light years, and the federation is 10,000 light years across.

Okay, now I have a question -- supposedly, Warp 10 = Infinite Speed, i.e. occupation of all points in the universe simultaneously.
So what's the highest Warp speed attainable before Warp 10, given that there are species whose drives can propel them lots faster than Federation warp drives, but Warp drives are theoretically capable of infinite speed? How many .9s does it take before Warp drive can outrun everything else out there without going infinite?
EDIT: What if they deliberately achieved Warp 10 and decided to simply select a point in the universe to reenter real space in? Instantaneous warp travel from any point in the universe to any point in the universe... coolness.

You can have an infinite amount of decimal places until the next number. Eventually the Star Trek universe will have have to redefine the Warp scale when every ship is easily capable of some huge Warp 9.99999999... number. They might not be able to achieve the fabled Warp 10.Raoul Duke, Jr. wrote:Okay, now I have a question -- supposedly, Warp 10 = Infinite Speed, i.e. occupation of all points in the universe simultaneously.

As for other FTL engines that also utilize warp, it could be the same as comparing a steam engine with a diesel engine. They use the same tracks but propel themselves along differently.

Probably a new scale based on Warp 9.999 (fastest previously achieved) being relabeled Warp 10 and subsequent decimal places being labeled new warp factors.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Either transwarp or (most likely) a new scale.Montcalm wrote:What about the Warp 13 in the last episode of TNG?
Thus Warp 13 = Warp 9.999999 on the old TNG scale.
So does staring at photos of Janet Reno without proper eye protection.Yeah, but it makes you into a lizard.
I'm guessing they'll have to find a way to compensate for that, probably by analyzing data from unmanned testbeds. (Which would be a new practice for Starfleet, I realize.)
FYI, the warp scale was changed between the first and second editions of the encyclopedia.

But the doctor figured out a treatment. They should have sent everyone back and then used it.

I always assumed it was Warp 9.9999999999999 or 9.9 etc.. continuing out to 13 decimal places. They just call it Warp 13 because it would be a pain in the ass to call all of the various increments of Warp 9.9 by their number.Montcalm wrote:What about the Warp 13 in the last episode of TNG?
EDIT:Is it realistic or did the producers were wanking?
Realisitcally it was a wanking thing from Q so whether it will ever be defined seems unlikely.
By the way, I would think it's likely that in Q's wankfest future that Warp 13 might not be the top end for Federation ships. It could be, but in TNG era they usually referred to a ship's maximum speed as "maximum warp". If they were to continue the naval tradition I suppose they could call it flank.
