Sometimes, like ancient bagpipers, letting the enemy know you're coming can be a powerful psych weapon. Besides, I got the impression that Starfleet really had no clue wtf was going on until Archer delivered the message from the future.That way they would not have given Starfleet an early warning.
I guess the deeper point is that it's sad that one of the better Ent episodes was still rather crappy, relatively speaking. I haven't given up on Ent entirely yet, but it'd better get better next season.
