I suppose the same thing can be done for Elite Force 2. Since both games are using the same engine, could you write speech scripts for Jedi Outcast?
If both games use the same engine, you can probably port the characters back and forth. If you do the animation in EF2, I'll send you a greenscreen only level. That's about 2 minutes of work to make that kind of set. However, the Uber editor for Quake 3 is really quick to learn.

Sound like you're planning on revisiting the "Star Wars vs Star Trek" theme. Some guy posted a mash on YouTube a couple of weeks ago and got a quarter of a million hits. (!)

I'd appreciate that, yes! That would help out a lot in a future project. Do you think it would work for Jedi Outcast as well?

Yes, I'm dabbling in it right now. I've had a Wars vs Trek page for 10 years, so I might as well try my hand at avideo. I know the video you're talking about. If a clip-show gets that many hits, I'm hoping I can do better!

If I can get a greenscreen level for both Jedi Outcast and Elite Force 2, we can finally see a Jedi vs Klingon contest! Or of course, something with a bit more substance!

Let me know when you need the level. Alternatively, you could call me and I'll walk you through creating one of your own using the Uber editor, which is free, available from www.ritualistic.com.

I don't know if it will work for Jedi Outcast. It's my understanding that there are some differences between various Q3 implementations. However, I suspect that there may be porting programs to move from one to the other.

Someone has been kind enough to make the Jedi Outcast one. Yes, I'd be grateful if you made one for Elite Force 2. And, you'd get a credit in that future movie! I suck at making levels, no matter how easy it is. Its a true case of not being able to think three-dimensionally!

I'd also like to discuss scripting with you. Have you found a way to make the actor's actually move their lips as you please, etc. I thought scripts were just key binds like "crouch" or something! I'd love to be able to make Vader in Jedi Outcast hold up his hand and form a fist, or even bob his head a bit as if he's talking.

Lipsyncing is supported in EF2. Don't know about Jedi Outcast. The best way to to learn about EF2 modding is at:

It’s now just a week before the exclusive premiere of Borg War on Machinima.com which has set up a top-level forum topic to discuss the movie. I’ve already posted a lot of information there (mostly about the machinima process by which I built the movie), so if you’re interested in learning more about the Borg War project, you should check it out. Here’s the link:

http://www.machinima.com/PHPBB/viewforum.php?f=35

The movie (which is 93 minutes long) is being released in 9 episodes, each roughly ten minutes long. Here’s a link to the preview of the first episode.

http://www.machinima.com/films.php?id=4568

Here’s some additional background about Episode 1:

Borg War takes place 17 years after the return of Voyager. In the alternative (i.e. non-canon) universe where Borg War takes place, the Federation (as well as the other key races) are well aware that the Borg, after regrouping, will eventually attempt to expand into the Alpha quadrant. The obvious approach to combating a race that adapts is to make every hit lethal, so Alpha quadrant starships have been optimized for massive power generation and mounted with 360 degree hard-points. In addition, much research has gone into new types of weaponry and hybrid weaponry. The Klingons, for example, have developed two new weapons: a proximity-fused armor-penetrating photon torpedo (which explodes from inside the penetrated ship) and a massive version of the ion-cannon, a stationary weapon intended to destroy dreadnaughts at a single hit. We see both these weapons in action in Episode 1. Any comments?

The text at the start only flashed on the screen for half a millisecond. I know it's just legal crap, but it's odd.

Picard's goatee looks like a bandaid.

It's pretty good from a technical standpoint, with no jarring transitions between pieces of dialogue and smooth editing.

The video editor keeps clipping of the first few miliseconds. Arrrrrrgh!!!
It's supposed to be a full second. I'll make the change. Thanks for your help.

I thought that some readers might appreciate a couple of stills from the movie before checking it out. Here they are:

Here's the deal. At initial release, Machinima.com will be the only source for the actual episode files, although previews, outtakes, etc. will be posted on other video sites (like YouTube).

The video files on Machinima.com are very high quality; the .wmv and .mp4 versions (we hope to post both) were converted using Autodesk Cleaner XL, which makes the best use of both codecs. The streaming Flash files on Machinima.com are being created from the uncompressed AVI files, which makes for a much more attractive stream than when a pre-compressed file (like wmv or mp4) is used as input (like with YouTube.)

When you download Borg War from Machinima.com, you'll be getting the absolute best and highest quality possible at full resolution, and each file will be only about 100Mbytes for each ten minute episode. Also, when you stream from Machinima.com, you'll get the cleanest and clearest Flash version possible.

Sometime in the future, when Machinima.com downloads subside, I will probably load the episodes onto various other video distribution sites, including YouTube, Yahoo, Google, etc. But they won't look as nice as the Machinima.com version.

Sometime in the future, if there's demand, I may make a real DVD version, which would be higher quality still (and would be formatted as a real movie, without previews of the next episode). If I do this, I'm not going to dick around with DVD+R, etc. I'll get it manufactured professionally so that it plays on EVERY DVD player. But that's a ways off.

Yes. All the sets for Borg War were built specifically for Borg War. At some point I may post them for EF2 modders to chuckle over. (They're stage sets, not full levels and thus only complete when viewed from specific camera angles.)

I'm doing the same thing with greenscreen with regards to "The Movies". I can't mod worth a damn!

The eight remaining episodes will be released on Machinima.com each Friday over the next eight weeks.

Each Friday at 9pm Pacific, Machinima.com will host a live forum to discuss Borg War and how to do Star Trek-themed animation using inexpensive computer games. The forum is at:

It would be great if some of the folk from this board wanted to join me there, since I've found that this board tends to have the sharpest minds who

Borg War Episode 2 is now live.

Post by kephren »

Borg War Episode 2 is now live.

Summary: Jureth, eldest son of the House of Mi'qoch, suspecting that the Empire faces a Borg invasion, calls upon the Federation for help. Captain Picard sends Captain Tuvok to investigate using the Dallas, a Defiant-class ship highly modified for reconnaissance in Borg space. Meanwhile, General Mi'qoch (patriarch of the House) must use the power of the Empire's heaviest-armed Starbase to defeat a Borg menace unlike any the Alpha quadrant has seen before.

Download or stream it from here:

http://www.machinima.com/films.php?id=4992

By the way, Borg War Episode 1 broke all the records for weekend views on Machinima.com -- the equivalent (in the world of Machinima animation) of getting top boxoffice receipts.

Machinima.com, the site that's hosting the release of Borg War, just issued this press release. It's a bit, well, formal, but I thought that the information it contains is interesting, because most machinima gets popular because people play the game. Since Borg War was done with two games that don't much of a player base, the only reason Borg War could have performed so well is because Star Trek fans are supporting it. Which makes me happy, because that's why I made it.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“BORG WAR” DEFEATS “RED Vs BLUE”

Independently-produced Star Trek feature film dethrones long-standing popular machinima video.

Los Angeles, CA – October 10, 2006 – Machinima.com, the largest machinima movie distribution network, announces that Episode 1 of Borg War, a feature-length animated Star Trek adventure, achieved more downloads in September 2006 than Episode 1 of “Red vs Blue,” the perennial winner since its debut in July of 2003.

“This is the first time that any machinima video has outperformed ‘Red vs Blue’,” says Ingrid Moon, head of production and programming at Machinima.com, who noted that subsequent weekly episodes of Borg War have also proven popular. “On its best days, ‘Borg War’ has been responsible for almost 10 percent of our total traffic, which is amazing considering that we host several thousand videos,” Moon says.

With hundreds of thousands of downloads a month, Machinima.com is the community focal point for the rapidly-growing filmmaking technique known as machinima, which harnesses the 3D rendering power of computer games to create a new type of video entertainment.

Episodes of Borg War are being released every Friday exclusively on Machinima.com through November 3rd.

“Borg War” features the voice talents of original Star Trek series Patrick Stewart, Tim Russ and the late Brock Peters, whose performances were revived using the voiceovers included in the games used to create the movie.
