Parturition re-do is up.

Just for a change of pace, Neelix is a jealous shithead. Just because Kes is spending time with some who has looks and actual skills.

Paradise is up

Extralong video full of chuck's ranting about the anti-technology stuff. Worst review of his for me in a while, just don't find the angry spiel stuff interesting.

To be totally honest when he said "Gilligan's island as run by Doctor Doom", i could not agree. Doctor Doom at least knows how to set up an economy and run a state.

There was a "what if" story a long time ago in which Reed and the FF die on an early mission. Doom takes over the world, ends war, starvation, poverty and disease, then runs off to challenge the space gods just because he's that bored of ruling the utopia he built.

This was one of the DS9 episodes I must have missed. In what society is theft of a quarter-pound of wax a hotbox offense? Or wasting time?

A society of a zealous despot wanting to make sure no one steps out of line.

The anti-technology rant is only so potent for this episode because of how hypocritical and outright criminal the woman who set all this up is. The fact they landed/crashed here. Her doing. The reason they have to live low tech, her doing. To make matters worse when the truth of it comes out no a single one of them calls her out on this.

Memorial up.

Is it my imagination, or does Chuck seem a lot angrier these last few reviews?

Both Paradise and Memorial were pushing a "torture builds character" aesop, so it might just be one of Chuck's pet peeves.

I'd forgotten this was a second Ghemor episode. Thought it was the one with the cardassian clerk hunting and killing her old resistance cell mates and ends with her being defiant to the end about it.

Which would be an interesting episode for chuck to tackle...

"Ties" still has one of the best Weyoun moments when Weyoun drinks the poisoned Kanar. The looks on Sisko and Dukat's faces is what's sells it.

Disagree. Basically just a recap plus a long rant about Star Trek monocultures. Which probably anyone who cares enough to watch his videos already knows about and nows the problem about it.

Strange how most other sci-fi doesn't get the complaint even though its just as true for them.

On the plus side he's stopping devoting half of episodes to his league of starship captains and bad impersonations. So that's a plus.

How much other SciFi does Chuck actually comment on, compared to Trek?
'Next time I let Superman take charge, just hit me. Real hard.'
'You're a princess from a society of immortal warriors. I'm a rich kid with issues. Lots of issues.'
'No. No dating for the Batman. It might cut into your brooding time.'
'Tactically we have multiple objectives. So we need to split into teams.'-'Dibs on the Amazon!'
'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'
'You know, for a guy with like 50 different kinds of vision, you sure are blind.'

The two other main shows he does with any regularity are Babylon 5 and Doctor Who. I can't comment on B5 since I'm not overly familiar with that show, but in DW the two main recurring races - the Daleks and the Cybermen - have total cultural homogeny as part of their very reason for being. You could perhaps make a case for the Sontarans and the Slitheen/Raxacoricofallapatorians having been turned into one-note races, but Chuck hasn't done any episodes featuring either of those two thus far.

Otherwise known as the episode completely devoid of conflict or character insight?

As a kid this episode bored me silly, as an adult I appreciate it a lot more, because there is character growth on Picard's part, even if it's surprisingly subtle. There's really no point where he acts unlike the Captain Picard we all knew by this stage, but you really feel he's made a journey, especially at the end.

Uhh... they did at least wipe off the flute before giving it to the Captain, right?

Wow. He's being really positive towards Chain Of Command. And not just because 'lol, Jellicoe made Troi wear a uniform'

Personally, I've never really understood the great love for Jellicoe. I mean he has his strong points but making sweeping changes right before a major operation, as a temporary commander, does not seem sensible to me.

I can't take Jellico seriously anyway since to me, Ronny Cox will always be SG-1's Senator Kinsey first and foremost.

If I'd have to venture a guess I'd say the reason Jellico is so not hated (because I don't think it ever amounted to him actually being 'loved') is because he is the, at the time, first Starfleet officer who actually behaves like he thinks he's serving in a military, and so are his (for the time being) subordinates. It's not so much that Jellico is a nice guy-which he isn't-it's that he finally showed that yes, Picard's ravings notwithstanding, Starfleet IS the UFP's instrument for waging war if and when that should become necessary.

And I'm sorry, but Troi does look massively better in uniform than she did in the abominations she wore before.

I just like that they were able to have realistic character conflict, where neither party was clearly right or wrong, or incompetent or insane. Even the resolution, grudging mutual respect, seemed so much more adult then what would normally happen when a guest star got in a pissing match with a main cast character.

500 metres of rope on a person is unrealistic? Piffle. I carry a dozen times that and more in my utility belt and for half of my career the damn thing didn't even have proper pockets.
