The best thing that a startrek writer can do for trek

Besides letting the show die, is write some decent scifi. Namely, have half the main cast, including the captain, die because of their own foolish ideals. It would be unprecedented in Startrek history. And to keep then dead, ofcourse.
And no "We die doing whats right" bullshit either. I want to see Archer go "FUCK! HOW COULD I HAVE BEEN SO STUPID?!!!!!"

The best thing a Trek writer could do for Trek would be to subcontract their job to a retarded monkey.

I wonder how good a show about Starfleet Marines would do. It would have proper military advisors and they would NOT compromise on military authenticity for plot, they would have to fix the plot. The Marines would be taking planets, fighting with even some armor, taking over ships, and maybe we can see them in other actions as well.

What they needed to do was eviscerate the writing staff and replace them with a completely fresh crew with a new outlook. How the hell are you going to get fresh writing for a new series and a fresh take on Star Trek if you use the same goddamned staff?
They should have gotten the writers from Space: Above and Beyond. Those guys would have given the whole show a COMPLETELY different, much grittier feel.

Agreed. Imagine seeing Federation Assault Carriers with Marine fighters and infantry. Of course to increase realism the infantry would not also be the pilots, instead we see some of both as they interact. Lots of infantry level stuff with how the Marines interact and live, occassional armor actions, and even fleet movements and attacks when things turn bad.
I have suggested before and will suggest it again. Enterprise SHOULD have been about the Cardassian conflict shortly after the TOS movies ended and the Enterprise-B commanding a Marine Expeditionary force as they fight against the Cardassians.

Trek infantry show? I smell a series version of the Starship Troopers movie. <barfs>
With the exception of DS9, Star Trek has been more about relative peace or low-intensity fights rather than a prolonged hot war. There's a lot broken with modern Star Trek but introducing a war won't necessarily fix it. There's just not enough scope in war (mythic/mystical wars e.g. LOTR & B5 excepted) to do several years worth of interesting television.
If I had full creative control over Trek (which is not the same thing as being a writer) I'd ditch the series concept entirely and turn Trek into something resembling a 'container' for miniseries and one-offs set in the same universe. There'd be a core group of settings and characters to keep the costs down but there'd also be the potential to do stories that don't firmly connect with any of the established core settings.
Instead of Trek being a series about X, it'd be a set of miniseries about people living in the Trek galaxy. A six episode run might be about people in Starfleet; then a three episode mini-run centered around smugglers or bandits. The next run could center on intelligent Klingons. Ideally all of these bits would weave into a central plot.
The key idea here is to get out of the box and do something innovative rather than rehash the same old dated trash.

The best thing a Star Trek writer could do for Star Trek...
...would be to just get out of Dodge. Leave. Abandon the sinking ship.

Why bother with Star Trek?
If what's so desperately needed is to turn it into something it isn't... why bother using Star Trek and having to fight fans who will want to go back to the same old routine?
If all that anyone can come up with for ST is war, war, war, (which is mighty unimaginative) then just bury the goddamn series and make up your own damn universe. God knows the ST universe gets bashed enough as it is... I don't see why anyone would want that baggage.

I'm not trying to plug my fanfic idea (Star Trek Untamed Space!) but i think something that shows the non-Starfleet sideof thetrek universe would be nice. Some Han Solo type smuggler/bounty hunters working on the fringes of Federation space. Not everywhere in the Federation is the idealistic utopia that it has been made out to be. I'd also like to see the Trek version of Mos Eisley.
The real benefit of that show is that you wouldn't be dealing with the Anomaly of the Wee or the Prime Directive, plus there would actually be a few battle scene involving small ships or ground fights between combatants that have actual experience and decent small arms, rather than those goofy looking phaers.

In order for Star Trek to make a show revolving around grunts, it just couldn't be done. It doesn't fit anywhere in any Star Trek period- not TOS, not TOS movies, not TNG ... nowhere. It's just unthinkable.

Maybe make a off shoot which focuses on a SF Intelligence operative infiltrating the Orion Syndicate?

That might be cool, specially 'cause they'd be "experimental marines", since they have never had them before. That way they would have to learn a lot from their mistakes. Also kill regular marines instead of redshirts (not the MAIN actors of course).
And get rid of the "bridge crew of 6 or 7" main cast stupidity... hm, would that still be Star Trek?

There already is a series version of Starship Troopers... it's called "Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles".
If you mean a ripoff, I agree.

Why the Star Trek universe?
