Nemesis question (and small spoiler)

Okay, I don't get this: the Remans served as ground forces for the Romulans during the Dominion war. They apparently have a respectable reputation as fighters. However, they are also Romulan slaves. This means the Romulans armed captives they'd previously been brutalizing in the dilithium mines...
am I the only one that this makes *NO* sense to?

the arming of slaves is not an unrealslite event. What I dont understand is how one of the military leaders can be human and no one notice it untill after he has been elected to power.

Well for one there is his habit of keeping the lights turned down and also he needn't have actually fought in any of the major battles, he could have just been involved in Romulan forces only skirmishes.
As for slaves being armed, there are a number of different explanations, offer them their freedom in exchange for fighting, mind control are the two that come off the top of my head.

Perhaps Shinzon has telepathic powers. That'd help him fool them into thinking he's a Reman.

I was thinking of the Confederacy when I asked this: the idea of arming slaves scared the hell out of them.
The mind control angle is an interesting thought: Shinzon's Vizier is telepathic, so it raises the question of how many more Remans are.

The Romulans are based heavily on the Romans, it is always useful to look here for examples of such behaviour. The Remans are identified as a lower "Caste" in the Romulan Star Empire. To the Romulan mindset its either your a member of the Romulan Star Empire or your not.
Once a Member you have a place, not based on race but skill, this is proven by Commander Sela posistion as she is a half breed human, pretty impressive in a Empire founded and run in the majority by race that kill their own young for natural birth defects.
Human Defector Stefan Deseve served in their military as well, Shinzon a Romulan Clone of A human also reachs a notable military rank before the coup.
Remans are good assault troops and Labourers-Use them as required. Thats the Romulan view-now to the UFP, the Remans themselves its slavery. No Romulan in the film goes on about slavery.

Giving slaves guns and making them fight beats the hell out of giving convicts guns and making them fight.

Lest we forget that there was a side deal between the Romulan Military and shinzon. Perhaps one part of the deal was Shinzon leading Reman troops into attle against the Dominion and in return for a huge supply of disposable soldiers Shinzon got the Scimitar and the Thalaron generator which was probably being developed for a new assault on the founder homeworld. The assasination of the senate and shinzon striking at the Federation were two parts of a separate but related deal.

Given the laughable quality of the "elite troops", I'm inclined to say the Remans were really cannon fodder and the Romulans just told the Federation the Remans were "special assault forces" or whatnot.

Unlikely, considering that the Romulans consider Remans to be inferior and use them as slaves.
Charecter shields are a more plausable explanation for the helplessness of the Reman "elite" troops.

This doesn't explain the fact that Skippy was a commander during the war, with numerous successful engagements to his credit.

I did note that in the senate scene, they were complaining about dilithium output from the mines having dropped... I'm assuming that the falloff in output had something to do with the Scimitar's construction. Sound reasonable?

Master of Ossus: Consider the quality of Federation redshirts and Jem'Hadar and try again.
Data's cat could probably win most Star Trek battles.
