Berman on Trek

Post by Nathan F »

Well, any hope for Enterprise redeeming itself has just been flushed down the toilet. Berman stated that he is 'no longer worried about any scientific aspects of Enterprise'. Which is apparently being shown in a few episodes of Enterprise (Rogue Planet, the Communicator, etc., etc.). I would say that Berman and Braga's time with Paramount, specifically Trek, is running short, hopefully anyways.

Braga ruined Berman. He did well and made some pretty good episodes for TNG, but ever since Braga has come onto the scene, he has had a VERY negative influence on the franchise.

Maybe they will link it to tos and next generation by introducing a young Sarek.

I hate them both. It doesn't matter if they have written few good episodes, there are always better writers out there who can put much more effort then they can.

I realized that Enterprise was not going to recover with B&B at the helm some time ago. In fact, I can pinpoint the exact second when I realized it. It was in "Shockwave" part II, when Hoshi ripped her shirt off for no reason. That was when I realized that the Trek we had once known was irrecoverably gone. They will definitely need a new writing staff, and probably new production staff, in order for the series to recover.

General Announcement: Keep this clean. The less talk about shooting B&B, boiling them in oil or nailing them to crosses the better. Discuss what the jackass said, or what you think about what he said, but not how you'd like to to get rid of him.

Death threats, even those spoken in gest, aren't funny and can result in legal problems.

Let's look on the bright side of this statement. Maybe Berman is getting someone else to worry about the scientific aspects of Enterprise. However, I think it makes Enterprise will go down the tubes even quicker.

The only way they'll link Enterprise and TOS is by making T'Pol Spock mom.

WTF?

I split this in PST with the intent of sending half the thread here but for some reason both parts migrated to OT. Can someone boot it back over to PST? Thanks.

Yeah. I think that the board had problems with us both splitting the thread simultaneously (in exactly the same manner, I might add). Sorry about that.

Okay, I know we say some bad things about those two around here, but come on, no one could be that stupid, no one deserves to be insulted in such a way. Only the lowest form of life would do that.

I think you owe Bevis and Butthead an apology.

I am disappointed not only in the scientific aspects of Enterprise, but also in the literary aspects. I stopped watching it some time ago, but sucker that I am, I decided to give it another try a couple of weeks ago. That was the unfortunate episode in which Trip was stranded with an alien on some forlorn planet--how many times have we seen variations on that plot in Trek?

So I beefed about this with a friend, and he sent an excellent reply, which I'll copy below (apologies for not asking first):
If I like a show I can usually come up with an explanation for inconsistencies. I'm not going to try with Enterprise. I can imagine the conversation when they came up with this episode:

Braga: What are we gonna do this week?

Berman: I think its time for a Trip episode.

Braga: How are we going to work Jolene's boobs into it?

Berman: I think we can reuse a TNG episode as the basic plot. You know the one where the blind guy and the pointy ear guy are stuck on that planet.

Braga: Great, because it makes my head hurt to come up with new ideas. We'll make it really hot so T'Pol has to take her top off.

Berman: No, this is gonna be a Trip episode. But that's a good idea we can have Trip take his top off.

Braga: That reminds me of an old sci-fi series some old guy told me about a long time ago.

Berman (horrified): You listen to fans?

Braga: No, not usually, but I was stuck in an elevator with him. He had a strange name, I think it was Rod Berry. Anyways, the captain of this ship was trapped on this planet with a dinosaur man and he had to fight him with the survival of his ship at stake.

Berman: Sounds good, we'll have them fight at first and then work together, no one will expect that.

Braga: Ok, and what if we make it like that TNG episode where the bald guy is stranded on that planet with the alien and they can't understand each other?

Berman: Yeah, we save a lot of time if we don't have to write stuff for actors to say.

Braga: Oh, and we've got to do it at night so no one will see how cheap the sets are or that we've used them before.

Berman: We'll make it so they have to get off the planet before the sun comes up. This will add tension and we'll be able to get a shot of Archer looking constipated, I mean concerned.

Braga: I still don't understand how we're going to get T'Pol into her underwear, maybe we could make the heat contagious?

Berman: Let's save that for another episode, we don't want to run out of ideas.

Braga: Lets go watch reruns of Voyager and get more ideas for the next episode.

Well, at least he admits that he doesn't give a rat's arse about realism.

I wouldn't really care about a lack of realism if the writing was good and it was internally consistant.

While some of the stories might be alright, they are destroying 'internal consistencies' with the rest of the trek series. While a little bit of techincalities are VERY excusable, the blatant disregard for it is unexcusable.
