The Pussification of the Antagonists

Post by Defiant »

During the run of Star Trek, we have seen a disturbing pattern of what I like to refer to as "The Pussification of the Antagonists". Basically, we've seen villains introduced who had the potential to shake the very foundations and introduce real drama into the story.

Unfortunately, because the writers don't have the courage to really deal with a complex enemy, they pussify them, making them harmless. My favorite example is Species 8472. Here you have a group of extremely powerful xenophobes who threaten even the Borg. Did the writers use them effectively? Oh no, they did something stupid like showing Species 8472 taking human form because they wanted to better understand humanity. Weak!

Any other examples?[/b]

The Ferengi. In TNG, they kick the E-Ds ass. In DS9, they're a bunch of limp-wristed moneygrubbers.

I particularly dislike this, for the reason that Species 8472 appeared very terrifying. Why shouldn't they use the oppurtunity to have some truly weird aliens??

Species 8472 is a good example, so are the Klingons. And the Borg for that matter. And Ferengi. The Remans always were pussies. As were the So'na. Frankly StarTrek hasn't have very cool villians recently.

I don't know, I found Janeway to be an even more threatening villian as time went on. By the fourth season, I was so scared the producers would give her a topless scene, I had to stop watching Voyager. Now that's scary.

The Borg. They start out as one nasty race, but as VOY goes on, they get dumber and dumber.

The Hirogen. They look fearsome when they first appeared, but after the Killing Game, they just pussificated out with this new holodeck tech Janeway gave them.

I don't think you get any better example than the Borg. I know it's already been mentioned but this can't be stated strongly enough.

Don't mention that!!!

....who knows...B&B may use it in some lame attempt to make Enterprise even more pathetic(looky they got to Khan before Kirk did...and exiled him onto the Botany Bay)

And yes...the Borg...who literally went from Nigh invincible to weak(Descent) to annoying(FC~voyager)
