Have a question. Does the planet Earth still have its own government by the time of TNG, or does Earth use the Federation government for everything?

An interesting question. Given that Captain Sisko was temporarily assigned as chief of security on Earth, it seems that, in the Paramount canon, Earth is treated much as the District of Columbia is treated in the United States -- namely, that it is governed by the Federal government, and not by local government.

Well we know Earths capital is Paris, so I guess there is an Earth government. I mean, why not? Vulcan has it's own government, as does Trill, and Betazed (or zoid, or whatever).

Read in a Non-Cannon source that the planetary level government is the New United Nations.

The capital is in Paris? I find that fact very very disturbing. Extremely disturbing. Very interesting that Earth seems to have surrendered its soverign rights to the Federation.

Well, I guess B&B or whoever made the capital Paris, decided not to do what most scifi shows and stories did and make Earths capital Geneva.

Bah, not New York, but that would be a heckuva lot better than friggen Paris of all places.

Reminds me of how in "The future is wild" they make it out as if Paris is the center of culture and such by blatantly saying it.

Well, I don't know about the 1000 colonies, but in the 5th Element, New York is the capital of mankind.

lets not forget that the FRENCH picard has a british accent which indicates that britain made war on france, conquered the pussy nation (duh) and ran the place for a while and probably still is running the place.

Does the political entity known as the United States of America still exist?

I would just hope that the New UN is nothing like the current UN...

I don't think the United States per se still would still exist in a unified world government. It's too small to be a regional or continental governing body, but too large to be considered "local". My guess would be that groups of individual states would be under some sort of sub-regional government, which in turn would be part of the regional North American government.
