Yet more gross negligence
The B5 Design Flaws thread just made me think: the cargo bay of the Enterprise-D is a deathtrap. In spite of the fact that it can open to space, there aren't any emergency environment suits in it, as the episode "Disaster" illustrated all too clearly.
Furthermore, the panel that controls the outer door and force field is across the room from the panel that controls pressurization. Beverly and Geordi were therefore forced to stagger across the room in vacuum to repressurize the bay after depressurizing it to put out the "plasma fire".

Mike really needs to add a new category to his canon database: Fed incompetance. I suppose it would overwhelm anyone's memory space though.

I thought it already had a "Design Flaws" category that caught a lot of those.Darth Servo wrote:Mike really needs to add a new category to his canon database: Fed incompetance.

The fact people aren't wearing some kind of environment suit during a space battle anywhere on the ship is ridiculous in itself. Like in Gundam, where they prepare for battles by putting on their enviornment suits.

But it seems it didn't catch this one. There's more ways to be incompetant than just the design aspect.Ted C wrote:I thought it already had a "Design Flaws" category that caught a lot of those.

I checked. The CDB does have a "Design" category for problems like this. Mike just overlooked it. Perhaps we'll see it appear in the next update.Darth Servo wrote:But it seems it didn't catch this one. Er, besides Gundam, where else have you seen this happen?Darth Fanboy wrote:The fact people aren't wearing some kind of environment suit during a space battle anywhere on the ship is ridiculous in itself. Like in Gundam, where they prepare for battles by putting on their enviornment suits.
Actually, I should make this more clear. Have you seen this phenomenon of capital ship personnel putting on environment suits (which, BTW, would take awhile, given the uniforms commonly seen) when preparing for battle (which is not always a luxury; look up "ambush") in any American sci-fi?

Not on TV, or the movies, in the literature, you'll find more examples, since they don't have to worry about wardrobe and special effects budget, for instance, David Weber does it.Uraniun235 wrote:Er, besides Gundam, where else have you seen this happen?

He does have a SW database, Alyeska. I'm sure he'd appreciate any contributions you'd care to make.Alyeska wrote:If he's going to do a Fed Incompetance section, he should also do an Imp Incompetance section.

Actually, I agree that we should see one in the Star Wars canon database when it gets updated.Alyeska wrote: If he's going to do a Fed Incompetance section, he should also do an Imp Incompetance section.
Of course, Imperial incompetence is usually a matter of disastrous military decision-making, not inherent flaws in the design of their equipment.
Perhaps you should start an "Imperial Blunders" thread in the "Pure Star Wars" forum.

Unlike many scifi series, Gundam capships have no shields. Thus, they are much more vulnerable than ships like those from ST or SW. As a result, they have to be much more cautious than ships equipped with shields. In addition to the suits, their ships contain sealing blast doors used to close off damaged area, much like on a sub.Uraniun235 wrote:Er, besides Gundam, where else have you seen this happen?Darth Fanboy wrote:The fact people aren't wearing some kind of environment suit during a space battle anywhere on the ship is ridiculous in itself. Starfleet just doesn't worry that much about hull breaches because of the structural integrity fields and emergency forcefields which usually seal a hull breach fast enough to prevent casualties, usually didn't do the second best doomed red shirt (second only to the one who got turned into a small white cube and crushed) any good, Kirk when he was trying to fix the E-B's tractor beam either.
