I think that the competition of other films may have played some part in it, but I can't be certain of that, either. It's very, very hard to tell."

You think?

Another adding factor to why the movie didn't became so popular was because the story has been seen many times before so it had nothing new to offer.

I think after the box office beating Nemesis took Paramount is going to be very nervous about making any new trek films.

you know what though? i bet anything that the DVD sales and international box office tally will more than make up for it. because of that they won't see the writing on the wall and the next trek flick will be another ho-hum mediocore piece of blah.

Have to agree with the Colonel on this point. Nemesis will follow the path of other BO bombs that redeemed themselves at the DVD sales and rental rack as I have a feeling that Wong and I are not the only ones that were waiting to see it on DVD.

Excuses, excuses, excuses. Paramount should have known that Harry Potter and LOTR would be huge hits. Did they really think a P.O.S. like Nemesis could compete with them? They just don't want to admit that they are pumping out crap with ST's name on it. That is the ONLY reason Nemesis made any money at all. Take away the name and it would have flopped harder than Waterworld.

I don't really see why. You think they would have someone who is intelligent enough to recognize that you don't release a Star Trek movie a week before they release the most anticipated movie of the year. I mean come on is it really that big of a mystery to them why STN failed?

Nemesis wasn't a bad movie. In fact, it was quite enjoyable. It is just the fact that, as has been previously stated, B&B couldn't sell water to a rich man who was dying of thirst. These two are the worst marketing thing that has ever come to Paramount, which isn't really all that bright with their insistance of keeping UPN up and not selling shows like Enterprise to a major network.

Nemisis seemed like an above average movie, but the timing was wrong. It should have been put out in the summer and competed with The Hulk and the Matrix sequals. Then it would have at least had a good chance. BTW, how much did it make exactly?

US$18.5 million is what it brought in

And yeah, it could have competed the Hulk and Matrix Reloaded, but not two films that have the following of LOTR and Harry Potter. The Trek franchise has a dedicated fan base, but it is just not strong enough to compete with the fan base of LOTR which is probably about the same size and then the fan base of Harry Potter, which is probably almost as big.

It wouldn't have done much better no matter when it was released. When I mentioned Nemesis to my wife, she said "oh, there's a new Star Trek film out?"

Says it all, folks. And the people at my workplace had pretty much the same reaction. Nobody gives a shit any more. You can't make crappy spin-off after crappy spin-off after crappy spin-off without inducing audience fatigue.

According to Box Office Prophets, Nemesis made $42.69 mil. Poor showing no matter what.

Those were prolly old numbers I had, I remembered reading em somewhere earlier today. No telling.

Lack of interest at the box office will translate to lack of interst in video sales.

I just hope they have a special edition DVD with all the deleted scenes. I heard that some of the best parts were left on the cutting room floor.

Do not state things as fact. You dislike Nemesis but that does not automatically make it a bad movie.

The vampire feeding off of Trek's corpse wrote:Berman went on to say that he's not sure what the future will hold for the Trek film franchise. "There's a theory that there was too much time (between Insurrection and Nemesis)," he said. "There's another theory that there wasn't too much time. I, along with the people at Paramount, need a few months of perspective and thinking about it to then decide what's the best thing to do next. I don't think this is like falling off a horse, and you want to jump right back on it. But we'll see."
There is also the theory that, after seeing three incresingly shitty films in a row, people just weren't all that thrilled over the prospect of seeing a fourth from Berman's House of Schlock.

Well, this was certainly a shocker.

I actually liked First Contact. Despite the insanley stupid Borg, time-travel, the Queen ect. it was still a good movie. And even better since it explored Picard's tormented side. Much better than a clone IMHO.

Insurrection was poop. Nemesis, as I previously stated, was okay, but definatley won't go down in history as one of the greats.

The real problem is that this nervousness will translate into an unwillingness to spend any significant amount of money. This only compounds the other problems Star Trek is having, like retarded writers and audience burnout.

I think it's safe to say the next film is dead. Budget cuts have killed at least one previous Trek film (Star Trek 5; Shatner's original concept looked like it would have been a damn good movie, but it died from the same thing that killed "Dear Doctor" [studio bitching about "character conflict"] and problem after problem) and given the lackluster battle sequences of the last three films (you cannot tell me First Contact had a good space battle. It sucked.) nervousness on the studio's part will only compound the issues.

If I were religious I'd pray for a day when I log on and see a headline titled "RICK BERMAN, BRANNON BRAGA ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGES".

NTM "Die Another Day."

The thing is, it's not really an excuse to say that the film would have done better if it had been released somewhere else. The "Nemesis" and Paramount people CHOSE that release date when they could have waited or released it earlier. To now go back and justify "Nemesis'" poor showing by claiming that it was the result of stupidity on the part of Paramount Executives would be justifying the poor performance of their product by explaining that it did poorly because they suck at business management. That's not an excuse, that's just a division of the blame. While I'm not convinced "Nemesis" would have done much better given a better opening time, I AM convinced that its losses were exacerbated by its higher-quality, higher-powered, higher-budget competition.

That's the worst possible scenario--that Paramount will hedge its bets by making a low-budget ST movie which will only increase the rate at which the franchise spirals into oblivion. I hope that they put the money into a place where it's needed more--the WRITING for Enterprise is where the money can do the most good for the franchise.
