Threshold comes top of anything thats in this format "worst ###### in trek".

Yep, Threshold sucks beyond all belief in every conceivable way.

TNG "Genesis" is up there as well.

Don't forget "The Chase" and its mangling of evolutionary biology and statistics. Also, "Starship Mine" and its "baryon sweep" could be trumpeted as one of the most legendary blunders in sci-fi ever.

Then there was that episode with the Soliton "wave," which was nothing more than something traveling through space while oscillating internally. By that fucked up definition, everyone is a wave because our atoms happen to oscillate, too. The butcheries of wave physics in that episode were almost beyond comprehension.

For Voyager, that ep with the macroviruses was about the stupidest thing I ever saw on that show. They were those basketball-sized things that could fly around, hummed real loud, and you could kill them with a knife. Viruses.

The Next Generation, I laughed at their 'Genesis' episode, in which people began de-evolving. Riker as a caveman was worth sitting through the rest of the crap for, though. I also had a hard time believing the stuff that went on in that ep where they explored the head of a comet and a bunch of godly spirits began possessing people on the Enterprise and turning the ship proper into a temple or some damn thing. More stupid in the mystical rather than the science sense, however.

DS9--The Bareil croaks episode in which he was turned into a sort of robo-Vedek was intensely bad. I think they got their science from a graduate of the Weekly World News University for that one. I was even more incensed by the ep in which Keira became suddenly pregnant because...well, here's my opinion of this miracle from when it first aired--hasn't changed any:

'There is an infamous scene in the classic turkey THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN wherein the heroic male lead, a doctor, is explaining to the Colossal Man's weepy fiance why her mutated sweetie is having these awful chest pains. It's somewhat technical, he carefully reveals, but the main reason the Colossal Man's heart isn't growing as fast as the rest of him is because the heart is comprised of a single cell. If you watch this scene alongside the MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATRE 3000 audience, you'll see this statement greeted with initial stunned silence, then one viewer will call out, "You're not a real doctor, are you?" There's an exact counterpart to this piece of unintentional hilarity in this week's DS9 offering; Bashir tries to explain how he somehow stuffed Keiko O'Brien's midterm human fetus, complete presumably with amniotic sac, umbilical cord, placenta and other support structures, into Kira's dormant womb, and the more he babbles on to a stunned Sisko and Miles, the more one is inclined to likewise cat-call, "You're not a real doctor, are you?" I thought that DS9 had hit medical rock bottom last year with its dreadful positronic-brained Bareil resurrection. This one is worse...far worse...'

For Classic Trek, I think 'Spock's Brain' and the one with the three alien brains living in the dairy case, directing gladiatorial games for their amusement, were the best of the worst, as it were.

Hell, the whole show has everything when it comes to worst science!

Evolution doesn't work that way. You can't just spontaneously evolve into something.

What about that fucking stupid episode with the Voth, or whatever the hell they were called? The dinosaurs who supposedly blasted off into space 65 million years ago to avoid the asteroid impact, and found themselves in the Delta Quadrant, nicely evolved into bipedal humanoids with scaly skin?

The best part was a Voyager computer simulation of the "expected path of evolution" of dinosaurs into this intelligent bipedal humanoid! Fucking Hollywood idiots and their imbecilic misconceptions about evolution ...

It does kinda make sense though. the dinosaurs that left Earth knew in advance what kind of shit Paramount and the Tv networks were going to let on the airwaves.

I don't understand how a hi tech society such as the Voth developed all of that technology when their scientists seemed so inhibited by religion and social mores.

Yup. That episode was called Macrocosm. It also gets my vote for least realistic episode.

Pah. Almost all these butcheries of science could be blamed on the crew being morons--maybe Paris didn't evolve, he just spontaneously morphed into a lizard and the crew SAID he was evolving because they were morons. Ditto for most of the rest of them.

But the crack in the event horizon, that's stone cold scientific butchery. It's easier to toss that episode out of the canon than to try and rationalize that one.
