Imagine you're in the TNG timeline. What would happen if the Earth local government finally asserted itself and wanted to secede from the Federation?

Starfleet fractures and splits into pro earth, pro fed factions. Chaos ensues.

A civil war breaks out and the other powers try to move in.

Having no or minimal military assets, they can't do shit. Its unlikely many Starfleet ships, if any would join them and the whole prefix code thing would make it a short battle.

thats like washington DC ceding from the US. Where would they put the capital? and what about earth stations? and shipyards? All the federation assets on and orbitting earth would have to be moved and such. it would be a fucking nightmare.

I think he meant not only Earth, but Mars and the other colonys aswell. A civil war would break out. Vulcan would probably become the new Feddy capital. Earth could probably get the Andorians on their side, aswell as the Klingons.

I think that since the humans are considered the element that binds all the other alien races together and as it seems, makes sure that cooler heads prevail, that the old rifts between the alien races would open up and war would break out throughout Fed space.

seeing that the overwhelming majority of starfleet personnel is human, i would imagine there are some loyalties to Earth on their part. that would make for a messy ( see: cool) civil war.
....not to mention a plotline better than anything B&B could think up.

Yes, but why would they revolt?

Because they were tired of humanity providing 80% of the Starfleet crew and resources to protect all these piddly little alien races who don't do anything productive?

Sounds like a neat fanfic.

Xenophobia, for one thing. If I recall, there was an episode of DS9 (can't remember the name) where there seemed to be a threat to Earth itself. The Federation President was the top civilian authority, and he was an alien. Even in the 24th century, I find it hard to believe that human nature would change so much that they would surrender their power to a form of government that could possibly be run by an alien. Even if the alien is from an allied civilization.
I smell possible fanfic here...

Given the pervasity of humans throughout Starfleet, the influential nature of Starfleet, and the centrality of Earth to the UFP, I daresay the Federation quickly falls apart.
It's a rather bizarre scenario to begin with. It seems to me like Earth gets a lot out of the UFP; in exchange for protection by Starfleet, the Earth-dominated UFP gets a wide base of resources to draw from with which to build the human-dominated Starfleet, as well as a bunch of planets between Earth and it's allies for convenient use as military bases.

But it's not likely that it would suddenly happen in the 24th century. I don't think the Federation president in The Undiscovered Country was a human (Deltan?) and that was at the height of tensions between the Klingons and the Federation.
Besides, the motive you're proposing is completely anathema to the Star Trek concept.

Concidering the vast majority of Star fleet is human, Earth becomes a major power and the UFP becomes a major target.

Just because we haven't seen humans on Earth act this way doesn't mean it wouldn't be possible.

I suspect quite a large number of humans in Star Fleet are not from earth. And back in TOS Kirk mentioned several systems which where the most heavily populated in the Federation, Earth wasn't on the list.

Unfortunately, B&B are calling the shots and they would
never do anything this complicated/cool.

I had a fanfic idea like this awhile back, but it was different. I had it where an Admiral launches a successful coup and takes over the Federation, causing a civil war between his side and a group of Federation officers/cadets who oppose him.
