Actually, when Gene Roddenberry first considered to resurrect Star Trek, he considered using a wholly new cast but the same characters. Luckily, realizing that there only can be one William Shatner, he chose to do "Star Trek: The Next Generation" instead.

It's not a new idea. After ST 5, Harve Bennett wanted to make a "Starfleet Academy" movie with a younger Kirk, Spock and McCoy. Naturally the fans hated it.

Actually, this could work if the series was animated with today's CG tech. But recast Kirk? No fucking way.
