TOS Season 3: worth getting?

Post by Vympel »

I'm up to Season 2 of the TOS Blu-Ray, and it's coming time for me to consider getting the so-called "Turd Season". I've heard a lot of just how bad these episodes are (in particular "Spock's Brain") - but how many of the episodes are good? Is there anything worth watching in the season? Or should I wait a good long time before ordering the final season, when its much cheaper?

The TOS S3 DVD comes with The Cage.

If that isn't enough, there's also The Enterprise Incident and The Way to Eden (which is just hilarious).

Yes. Some episodes are clunkers ("The Mark Of Gideon", "Wink Of An Eye", "The Lights Of Zetar"), but even those have at least one good idea at the core of the story and they are watchable, unlike any given episode of Boobyprise. There are still several good episodes in that lot and the rest are average but entertaining on one level or another.

I didn't like a lot of episodes, they were running out of material, "The Way to Eden" and "Spock's Brain" are some of the worst episodes of Trek I've seen. The producer for this season also severely camped up Space: 1999 in its second season. Yet I also liked gems such as "The Enterprise Incident", "The Paradise Syndrome", "For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky", and "The Tholian Web".

Isn't Spock's Brain bad in a hilarious way?

I just did a check, The Cage is on the S3 Blu-Ray set.

Also, the idea of a show taped in 1966 being on such a high capability disc amuses the crap out of me.

It shouldn't, because its an amazingly high-quality release. The remastered effects look great in 1080p. 8)

The stunt doubles are really obvious tho.

The dildo-shaped starship of the Givers of Pain and Delight is very risible. I'm sure it was unintentional of the props department to craft such a design, of course...

Iss the blu-ray version the remastered effects version? Cause I'm fairly sure they went and replaced the dildo ship with what looks like a washing machine drum.

Yes. Here, you can only get the remastered version on Blu-Ray.

You can just use the angle button during a VFX shot to see what the original show looked like.

TOS was lucky in that way, as it was shot on good-quality film that would still benefit from an HD transfer - apart from the VFX, hence the replaced versions we got.

Yes very much so as is Way to Eden.
For I dipt into the future, far as human eye could see,
Saw the Vision of the world, and all the wonder that would be;
Saw the heavens fill with commerce, argosies of magic sails,
Pilots of the purple twilight dropping down with costly bales;
Heard the heavens fill with shouting, and there rain'd a ghastly dew
From the nations' airy navies grappling in the central blue;

It's funny how the unintentionally funny depiction of sex (like a sextoy starship) is also in comparable duds in other Star Trek shows, like in VOY's "Threshold" which climaxes with Janeway and Paris bumping uglies in mutated form and in DS9's "Let He Who is Without Sin" taking place on a resort planet renowned for having massive orgies.
