What if SFB Races were added to TV

This started out as a result of someone pointing out some very Starfleet Command inspired tactics/Diolog in Nemisis.
Now, what would be the Oppinion if the Lyrans, Mirak, Hydrans, Orion Raiders, Plasma Wielding Gorn, Advanced Tholians, & ICS were to show up in a TV franchise or a movie.
The thing that really scares me, with the Delta Flyer, Captains launch, Promethius etc. obesssion with seperating ships, what's the chance that those double hulled Lyran ships would seperate under the regime of the current powers.

Hell, what if they used the capabilities from SFB or SFC? Imagine warp fighting, combat at hundreds of thousands of KM and SF battleships capable of shattering planets in two volleys.

Wasn't warp combat a part of TOS?

THAT.... would save Star Trek. With good writers too, of course. I'd love to see a TMP series, with the ISC and every interesting race that isnt just another alien with an extra forehead ridge or two.
I love the idea of an evil Federation, the ISC. Could you imagine a PPD hitting another ship with ILM graphics????

It would give Star Trek the character it needs to survive. Multiple species, with realistic responses towards each other. For example.......Yes, the Federation desires peace but they will launch a pre-emptive strike if it's in their best interests.

But Star Trek shouldn't need the extra races. What's it got already?
Feds
Maquis
Romuluns
Gorn
Cardassians
Dominion
Ferengi
Klingons
Borg
That's just off the top of my head. Trek already has all the factions and races and powers it needs to make a great show- so the only possible reason to add new ones would be to make up for the utter lack of production talent.

Actually those are only the major ones.
Oh and the Feds and Maquis aren't technically races.
There are probably a lot more that can be brought up from TOS or elsewhere that have only been seen in passing.

Let's not forget the Tholians.

Hey it would be great if they actually used them. The races from SFBs are major races and are involved in galatic affairs.

Actually this would be a perfect way to save Star Trek. It
needs something new if there's any hope of saving it. New races bring new histories/conflicts/etc, which can only be good. All of these races have excellent histories that in my opinion are better than a lot of the recent stuff.
A new series/movie based on the
general war from starfleet battles would be much better than what we're suffering now. Of course that's probably too much to hope for....

Of course many of the races used in SFB and Starfleet Command are already canon races. You have the Klingons, Romulans, Gorn, Orion and IIRC The Mirak were mentioned in TAS. That only leaves the Lyran, Hydran and ISC. Given the tendancy to introduce funny brow ridge aliens of the week, I would much rather have aliens be major players on the galactic stage that accually LOOK Alien. A General War series would be very interesting IMHO.

*L* Riker lets make a close pass of that double hulled vesel to disable its weapons " "Aye sir" "What the????????"" Captain we have hit some sort of particle shied around the unknown vessel its damaged us pretty well" First Contact tween Lyran and Federation ships in combat TNG style

It was the Kzinti that made the appearance in TAS, they were renamed the Mirak for SFC, and renamed again Tzencathy (sp?) for use in a DS9 episode. Its in the episode were a changeling sabatoges the Defiant, and Odo has to kill him in the end.

They need to bring in the Hydrans. Just imagine their fighters being used against Romulans or, for crossover purposes, the Imperials.

The best thing for Star Trek would be to go off the air for a decade or so.

SFB to me is the only "Trek" that shows any common sense about anything.
And since this is so, there would be no way in hell the powers-that-be would use any of it.
There are so many better stories and scenarios written for this game system than anything current cannon Trek could come up with.
So, any chance that someone would come up with a lightwave/3DSM movie?

If I'm remembering things correctly, the rights to SFB are derived from the old Starfleet Technical Manual and constitute what is effectively an entirely separate intellectual property from TNG and later shows.
The simplest way to do things would be for someone with suitably deep pockets, and a love for what Star Trek could be, to sub-license the SFB/Starfleet Tech Manual stuff and make a movie or TV series based on that. The situation would be analogous to that of the James Bond movies. "Never Say Never Again" was a retelling of "Thunderball," and was completely separate from the regular series of James Bond movies.
Maybe that's where the ST folks like Ms. Roddenberry should be putting their money? None of the stuff from the ST movies, or from TNG and any later shows, would be admissible under the license, so that all of the built up goofiness could be conveniently snipped away.

Yeah, but Paramount would want their greedy little fingers in on a portion of the pie...And would probably ruin it too!

I'm not in a position to know the particulars of the arrangement, but I believe that Paramount should have absolutely no claim on any properties derived directly from the old Starfleet Technical Manual. That is how Starfleet Battles and the role-playing game spinoffs apparently work. Thus, for instance, SFB Klingons are legal and out of Paramount's reach, as long as the Klingons don't have forehead ridges and goofy codes of honor.
Of course, that would not necessarily stop the Paramount legal department from trying to tie the matter up in the courts until the other side's money runs out.

We could always ask Steve Cole at
www.starfleetuniverse.com.
This does remind me about a similar discussion on that BBS a while ago...
And the legalese thing, from what I understand, Steve Cole and Paramount had to work out some liscensing deal with SFB even before SFC came out...Again, we would have to check that BBS for details or email him.

A tangled, tangled web it is. Any interest in volunteering to take the first step and the necessary question?
Still, I suppose it would actually be interesting to have actually trained Prime Teams taking care of first contact missions, or to have a version of Starfleet that is not composed entirely of pompous blowhards and perpetual Berkeley undergraduates.

LOL!! That is pretty much the image I have of current Trek.
Heck, we would at least see some *real* strategy and tactics for a change...

Bitch. Not every Berkeley undergrad is like that.
