The Star Trek tapestry is rife with what Calvin and Hobbes fans would affectionately call "Noodle Incidents", past exploits and adventures mentioned in passing, but which fans like us have nevertheless wondered about. Many Trek novels of the last decade have focused on telling these tales or filling the gaps or charting For example the Stargazer novels have showed us Picard's early years of command while the Terok Nor trilogy finally showed the Bajoran Occupation in its entierty.

What novels and stories would you like to see told or focused on?

I personally would love to see a novel focusing on the Khitomer Conspiracy. We already saw in the Klingon Academy game how Chang and Gorkon ended up where they did and it would be fun to see the behind-the-scenes plotting and dealing that transpired between Praxis' explosion and the dispatch of the Enterprise-A.

The novel Sarek partially covered this. The book took place shortly after ST6, but it directly talked about the cause of the events surounding ST6. The book Sarek was like an immediate sequel to the movie.

Since I've already harped on about it in the recent past I might as well say it again: I want to see a series of novels that focuses on Captain Sulu's command of the USS Excelsior and that period of the Star Trek timeline.

McCoy's my favorite, and I like the adventures that focus on him, like Doctor's Orders and Crucible.

But has there been a novel that describes Kirk's Axanar Peace Mission, and how he got all those other medals on his chest before the 5-year mission?

It would be nice to see a novel showing the Delta Quadrant powers after Voyager left them and how they're adjusting to all the changes Voyager put them through.

I would also like to see a book about Surak and the war that caused the initial schism between the Vulcans and the Romulans.

While we're on that topic, I would like to see philosophy books for the Klingon warrior way of life, the Surak's book of logic, and an actual Dixon Hill mystery.

I'd like to see some more stories about the E-B and C. Captains Harriman and Garret seem very underused in the ST book world (correct me if I'm wrong)

I also wouldn't mind seeing something showing the changes that happens to starfleet between STVI and TNG. Perhaps something following some young cadet whose inspired to join by Kirk, only to see the Starfleet he joined change so much

The VGR relaunch is currently moving towards that. Starfleet finally perfected the quantum slipstream drive and it is the cornerstone of Project Full Circle. The project's goal is to resume exploration of the Delta Quadrant and follow-up on worlds/cultures Janeway and crew made contact with -- (an easier prospect now Spoiler Voyager is the flagship of the flotilla).

So far, I think we've had a rogue Species 8472 member who still believed Starfleet was a threat.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that covered already. Some Vulcan trilogy IIRC.

Yes, in Josepha Sherman and Susan Shwartz's "Vulcan's Soul" trilogy.

-Borg vs. Dominion drawn out conflict.

-Voth ship arrives at Earth, announce they want the planet back. (mirroring the latest Dr. McNinja storyline but still...)

-A later-era update to "By Any Other Name" where the Kelvan Empire resurfaces somehow.

You could have an entire book series about the aftermath of the discovery of the Dyson Sphere.


EDIT: I should add that it doesn't even have to jump straight to ZOMG GALACTIC INTRIGUE with Klingons and Orions or whoever the antagonist flavor of the year is. Just Starfleet's and the Federation's response, along with the actual exploration of the damn thing, ought to be enough to fill at least one or two books - I'm thinking something like Rendezvous With Rama.

'Sphereworld' written by Larry Nivenesque

Maybe an anthology or novella series set in the Dominion War. Stories from the front lines (ala Siege of AR-558) and the never seen fleet battles (the massacre of the 7th Fleet). Something to give the war a true sense of scope, maybe go into just how bad the losses were.

It's a pretty solid collection of stories. The DS9 characters appear, but it's primarily through the viewpoints of characters from TOS, TNG, and the original novel series (IKS Gorkon, New Frontier, etc.)

There are stand-alone stories as well, but a number of them flesh out events mentioned in passing during DS9's last seasons (the invasion of Betazed, the Breen attack on Earth). My personal favorite is" Twilight's Wrath". We get to see one of Shinzon's campaigns during the war, which answers a number of questions from Nemesis and makes him a far more interesting character than what we saw on screen.

The Captain's Daughter is about Captain Sulu, and I remember it being pretty good. I wish they would do more, though.

Also, I really like how Ship of the Line filled out the backstory on the Bozeman.

Still, the bombing of Bajor was pretty shocking (mostly since I didn't see most of DS9).

I wouldn't mind seeing an entire book from the Maquis' perspective. What was it like for them when the treaty was signed, when they formed up, when the Federation started hunting them down, when Ro Laren and Eddington joined up. When the Dominion stormed through the Badlands. What the survivors, all half dozen of them, did during and after the Dominion War.

Forged in Fire is another novel focusing on Captain Sulu during that timeframe.

The aforementioned Captain's Daughter covers Harriman as well as Sulu. It even does a decent job of explaining why someone who seemed so unsure of himself was given such a prestigious position and how Harriman overcomes the circumstances that were hindering him.

Serpents in the Garden also features Harriman, albeit later in his career where he's become almost as much of a legendary threat to the Romulans as Kirk was to the Klingons. That novel also details the Tomed Incident that led to the Romulans temporarily withdrawing from galactic politics.

I picked up the first book in that series on a whim and was surprised to find myself actually enjoying Voyager for pretty much the first time ever (other than the Elite Force game). It might help to read the Destiny trilogy first since some of the events in that series factor into the new VGR relaunch. Conversely, it also explains some background incidents that were alluded to during Destiny but not specifically covered. Also, when reading the first book be sure to keep track of the dates noted at the beginning of the early chapters -- it leaps around a bit chronologically and might get confusing if you don't.

I second this; David R. George III did a fantastic job of fleshing out one of the biggest Noodle Incidents in the Trek canon and making Harriman a credible bad-ass in his own right.

I'd like to see someone do a book on Archer's court-martial for incompetency through the first two seasons of Enterprise and Dr. Phlox being hunted down for a war crimes tribunal a la Josef Mengele which leads to the purging of the exploits of the NX-01 from public history to spare Earth and Starfleet the embarrassment.

We've gotten glimpses of the Maquis POV here and there. The VGR novella from the "Brave and the Bold" duology shows how Tuvok infiltrated Chakotay's cell and the suspicion he faced. Double Helix: Quarantine shows how Tom Riker became sympathetic to the cause and how Chakotay and Torres influenced the decision (in fact, the hijacking of the Defiant turns out to have been Chakotay's idea). Diane's Carrey's Dominion War duology shows Ro Laren leading one of the last surviving cells during the early months of the War.

Personally, I would like to see a novel about Nelix and what he did prior to the events on Voyager. If written well it could give us a lot of insights into things like local events, the Kazon etc. It certainly could be an interesting read.
