Which ship?

Post by Jason von Evil »

Ok, in my ST fanfic, the main crew end up getting a new ship after their old one (a Norway) gets nearly totaled after a battle with a Valdore (or Warbird). I can't decide which ship they should get, the choices are:

Nova

Excelsior

Prometheus

Dauntless (SF actually builds the Dauntless class)

So, which one shoulder I pick. I'm also open to suggestions for other ships?

It is pretty silly for a whole crew to be kept together and to be assigned en masse to a new ship. If it did in fact happen, I can't imagine them being transferred to anything but another Norway without a lot of additional training.

I meant like the main crew, like the Captain, Helms, ops, tactical, CMO and Chief of Engineering. The other none importantant guys get dispersed. Well, a war is about to break out and one of the Admirals wants these guys on a warship.

Steamrunner. It is one of my fav's for the modern SF.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

You could pick the Prometheus and by accident one of the parts with some of the main crew gets left behind enemy lines or something.

Or maybe not

I would say that a Intrepid or a Soverign would be a good idea.

AKira would be ideal if you llow for it, its one of the few SF designs that actually seems practical and it is best for fighter deployment.

Intrepid or Akira, maybe. We can eliminate the Nova as being too small for a warship. The Dauntless probably wouldn't be built in sufficent numbers when the story starts and the Prometheus's assault mode would have to used atleast per battle. So really, it's now a contest between the Excelsior, Akira and Intrepid.

It is too old, slow, and weak. Though, this could be used to help develop characters.

if you wanted to use something that out of date, why not use an NX. They are cheaper and look better.

I doubt any NX's still exist and those things are so out of date, it would be cheaper to refit a Connie. If Excelsiors were so outdated and weak, then why the Lakota refits?

While the Akira is a good design, it is a fan favorite, the Intrepid is a personal favorite of mine as well, though I hate to admit it cuz of Voyager. It also needs a good story to rehabilitate its association with Voyager.

I really like the Excelsior too, and if its a story in the 22nd century then I'd say go with it. But if your story is in the 23rd century, I'd go with the Intrepid.

Blah, another techno wank, only seen once ship with abilities that won't do shit. Multi vector attack=fighters not a lego ship. IMHO.

Nova are almost strictly research, if I remember correctly they have only 2 phaser banks and one small photon torp launcher.

Exlecior is out of date.

Promethues seems to be the new line of Warship, (seeing how the seeminly built one Sov.), but the I personnaly think it's attack mode spliting thing is fruity.

Don't know what a Dauntless is.

Other ok ships:
Galaxy: although I doubt they are still in production.
Defiant: Powerful and apparently still being made, but not much room on their for other missions other than fighting.
Sov: The E-E needs a sister.
Intrepid: Unlimited photon torps, shuttles, and crewman! Plus it's pussification field.

Also you could create your own ship or use a fan made one.

You could always just make the Prometheus like the producers/designers IIRC thought it would play out in-universe. It would grow a bit, lose the MVAM and be the newest HC/BC primarily warship based hull in the Fed fleet.

If you go with the Dauntless, Starfleet would have had to significantly upgrade the weapons specs of the canon Dauntless, she wasn't that heavily armed. (especially since you want em to get a warship) She does have one major plus over the others, she's damn fast!

Excelsior could work if its similar to the Lakota upgrade wise. Otherwise it just unfortunately doesn't have enough punch to go toe to toe with modern designs.

Nova is likley to small to be an effective warship, and canon wise, it isn't that heavily armed as has been said already. You can upgrade to a point, but its still a pretty damn small hull, and you already have the Defiant class that's the same size and basically a pure warship, so I doubt SF would waste the resources turning a Nova into a warship when they already have a similar design that's all warship.

Another design to consider is the Nebula with weapons pod. With galaxy sized primary phaser arrays and a double wide butload of torpedo tubes, possibly upgradable to quantums is SFCE gets off their lazy buts, you could handily lay the smack down with one of em provided your CO and TAC officers have an ounce of battle sense.

My reccomendation would be a modified Prometheus, mainly because I like her lines and she's the most warshippy (is that even a word? :) ) of the proposed ships.
Blah, another techno wank, only seen once ship with abilities that won't do shit. Multi vector attack=fighters not a lego ship. IMHO.
While I have to agree that MVAM is pretty dumb, there is nothing much wrong with the ship in joined configuration. Just make the design slightly larger and expand the shuttle bay with the room saved by taking out the MVAM clamps and hull. Replace with a squadron or two of fighters.

I haven't read you fic, but here is some criteria to base your choice on:
How well did your crew perform compared to the norm? This will have an inpact of the kind of ship they get. Starfleet would probably reserve their newest designs, like Dauntless & Prometheus for their best captains.
Unless your Executive officer performed poorly or they lost their ship quite soon after they got it, he/she will probably be promoted to Captain and given an own command.

About Prometheus, its splitting capability will probably require more senior officers than a Norway, so you probably have to add more characters if you decide on that one.

Ok, alittle info: The story is set about 25 or so years after Nemesis. This Admiral is now in control of the Federation after staging a successful coup. I got the idea from that "How would you improve StarFleet" thread, so SF has beefed up their war ships a bit. The story is mostly about a war that breaks out between the Federation and an alliance of The RSE, Dominion and a few smaller races. Oh, and the Klingons are um...gone. Yeah, they tried to fight a war against the Feddies and well, Qo'o'nos (or however you spell it) got BDZed.
