What would happen if the UFP met a bigger Federation?
Some Stafleet captain makes first contact with a new species, and all goes well, and they meet another government that welcomed people in open arms. Only thing is, this government is the Galactic Republic, or the Systems Commonwealth, or some other government that is peaceful, tolerant, etc. Would the UFP join, would they want the other government to be part of them? How would it work?

Re: What would happen if the UFP met a bigger Federation?
Given the enormous scale, age, and technology difference between the UFP and the GR, or the Systems Commonwealth, I think the UFP would intially trade with the larger bodies, and then gradually become mroe and mroe invovled with acquiring medical tech and other civvie stuff, until they are a de facto member and "tie the knot."
But they would probably join the GR or the Commonwealth as a semi-independent body, like (IIRC) the Bothans, the Hutts, the Corporate Sector Authority and the Tion Hegemony.
Whilst I think some diehard UFP leaders would want the GR or the Commonwealth or whatever to join them, the other side would most likely think "fine, piss off you arrogant upstarts!"
And in the case of the Commonwealth, the UFP can't even point to being the birthplace of humanity, as the Commonwealth already has it's own Earth.

My memories of Hercules in Space are somewhat fuzzy. Which planet did they have as the "true" home world of humanity if it wasn't the Earth?Eternal_Freedom wrote:And in the case of the Commonwealth, the UFP can't even point to being the birthplace of humanity, as the Commonwealth already has it's own Earth.

In fact, Earth was overrun by the Drago-Katzov pride, operated as a slave farm, and eventually destroyed by the Spirit of the Abyss in the 4th season of Andromeda. It was a planet without any strategic or economic value, and only one person (Harper, who was born on Earth) seemed to care when it was gone.

I meant that the SC also has a planet called Earth orbiting a sun called Sol in the Milky Way Galaxy. That would probably confuse the hell out of the diplomats involved:paladin wrote:My memories of Hercules in Space are somewhat fuzzy. "I'm sorry Mr Ambassador, we've checked our records and it appears you are already part of the Commonwealth." That would be an interesting one respond to.

Re: What would happen if the UFP met a bigger Federation?
It all depends on who meets them
TOS era: The alien polity is friendly, distant and years ahead of the federation. Their ship is damaged and needs help getting home. The captain is a sexy female humanoid who Kirk falls in love with but leaves because she must explore her section of the galaxy and he his. Sigh.
TNG era: The alien polity is friendly, distant and of technological parity of the Federation though different. The alien ship is also exploring and the two crews hit it off. Wesley meets an equally nerdy counterpart and they almost blow up both ships trying to combine technologies. The subplot concerns Data, an alien sex toy and the Troi trying to exlplain this to him.
DS9 era: The alien polity is friendly, distant and also under threat from A Giant Space Goat. While they would really like to ally with and trade with the Federation, they are separted by an enemy who is about to crush them like a bug. Sisko offers the ships crew asylum but they nobly refuse choosing to go and die with the rest of their culture. Sisko waxes about how wouldn't it be better if we could all just be friends.
VOY/ENT eras: No such eras exist. You must be in error.

Hilarious irony points if the Uber Federation lets the UFP suffer some sort of trans-warp subspace vortex disaster they easily could have prevented but allow to happen because they have some sort of "First Directive" or whatever.

Re: What would happen if the UFP met a bigger Federation?
The first meeting between the Federation and Systems Commonwealth would be hilarious.
SC standard First Contact involves a full battle fleet per. Dylan's comments so I expect the Federation are going to shit bricks when dozen of heavily armed ships meet their poor Enterprise. The Nietz will probably consider the Feds to be pathetic and ignore them.
The Magog will have a field day with the Federation although it would be interesting to see how wins when they go up against the Borg. Ship contest not withstanding. You have melee fighters that like to lay their eggs in victims vs drones that like to stick probes in theirs. Might be funny.
