Personally, I think that it's the stupidest ship that we've seen. Oh look, the nacells can move on a hinge! That's brilliant! Wow, B & B are sure creative!

It's a shitty starship and I hate it.

Those rotating nacelles are the dumbest-looking thing I've ever seen.

*nitpick* Voyager can go to warp without "folding" her nacelles, but to reduce the subspace pollution while at warp the nacelles must be "folded" *end nitpick*
It doesn't take much as it stands do knock the warp core offline anyway.

I actually like it. It would make a pretty good cruiser and did make a good cruiser during the Dominion War.

I can do with out the folding warp engines, but I like the general lines of the Intrepid. I in no way like the show, but the ship is nice.

Keep in mind that Intrepids were testbeds for different techs and ship designs. There's also that whole thing about warp damaging the fabric of space. So, SF R&D were probably testing that variable warp geometry as a possible way of fixing that.

That's like saying a TiCo is too damn small because it isn't the same size as an Iowa. Different roles means different sizes. Not every ship in the fleet needs to be Galaxy sized to perform its intended function. Now if the Intrepid class was supposed to be a Battleship, then yes, I would agree that it's to small, but being only a Cruiser, it's bang on size wise in comparison with the rest of ships in the fleet.

Accually, the folding nacelle doesn't show how stupid the entire show is. For that, you have to look at the very bad scripts (nearly all of them, but there were a few gems in the bull flop) and obscene overuse of the reset button.

Considering how often Voyager engaged in combat, and how often the hinged nacelle got damaged, it isn't that vulnerable of a target as you (and common sense as well mind) would seem to indicate. In RL something as large/complex as the hinge on the Intrepid's nacelle pylon would be monstourously complex and vulnerable, especially since it would only take a little bit of damage to such a structural weak point to sever the nacelle. But apparently SFCE made it work far better than anyone could have any right to hope for. IIRC it was never damaged once throughout the entire run of VOY, other than where the entire ship was a wright-off.

I agree with that. She's got nice lines but some of the other stuff is a bit... flawed.

Only problem's the folding nacelles. It's actually pretty damned cool, other than that.

The only two Trek ships I've ever been able to tell apart from the others would be the Defiant and the E-Nil, the former because of it's radically different design and the latter because it is a model and not CGI.

That said, all the naceled ships look the same to me.

IIRC, the nacelles were originally concieved to "bend" by a certain degree, depending on what warp factor the ship was travelling at. Hence, Warp 2 might warrent only 5 degrees while Warp 9.9 would warrant 45 degrees, or whatever.

But of course that would require some slight intelligence on the direction/production team. I'm not willing to blame Foundation Imaging (yet) because if the producers didn't like what they saw, FI should have gotten a call demanding changes... but of course it stayed the same all 7 years, so obviously nobody thought it important.

From the perspective of the "elite" (which we are; come on, we're such geeks that we go online and argue with each other about little details in the series), it's lame. From the perspective of the General Audience (i.e. like my mother, who likes Enterprise), it's cool because a part on the ship is moving.

While it was the "elite" breed of fans that really spurred ST on to success in the early years, B&B have made it painfully obvious that they don't want the geeks; they want the general public. This above all else is the most damning evidence that B&B are only out for money; advertisers don't want geeks (we're too smart for their damn idiot commercials), they want people like my mother. And people like my mother like television trash like Enterprise.

I bet they honestly don't know why they get angry letters. I think they honestly believe that what they're doing is good and they can't imagine that someone might consider a more "restrictive" audience to be a greater success than appealing to the general idiocy- er, populace of the nation.

I think it's too imbalanced. The spoon-shaped 'saucer' is too huge, and the rest of the ship is tiny in comparison. It's like a Federation ship sculpted from Play-Doh. That, and the fold nacelles is useless. Why not just keep them in the 'up' position like all the other vessels do?

The Intrepid class is actually a pretty good design by Starfleet standards, minus the moving warp pylons. It's about the size of a Connie but much more compact, and, again, save for the poor nacelle pylon design, the connections between major hull components are much more robust than those of most other Federation designs (the Connie was particularly awful in this regard). And Voyager might have been a crap show, but the ship took a hell of a beating over the course of 7 years without any drydock time and was still functioning quite well by the time she got back to Earth(in Year of Hell, she was practically a flying wreck and still was capable of participating in combat. Even though that whole series of events was reset-buttoned out of existance, there's no reason to assume that Voyager's performance in that episode was grossly out of line with what she's "actually" capable of).

I always thought the elongated saucer sectionmade the ship look too much like a giant flying spoon.

I never really thought Voyager was all that great a ship. Never really
thought much about the folding nacells. I agree with Darth U, that the
saucer section is too big for the rest of the ship.

I also think that the 'windows' (white squares) that we can see were
too big.

the interpid class is over 300 meters long that puts her in the same length as a US aircraft carrier (I think thats right), so an aircraft carrier has over 3000 people onboard voyager has what 150, can't be too cramped.

I don't think it's that improbable that sci-fi ships are designed that way. The Naboo starfighters from TPM, for example, were inspired by a novelty hairpin.

I liked the look of it. Ive always liked smaller ships for some reason.
I like the Defient too. But my favorite looking Trek ship is the one where the nacelles are below the saucer section. Its the TNG look alike to the ship in Wrath of Khan. (khans ship)

That's a Miranda-class ship (I think). Basically a light cruiser.

I thought Voyager looked alright for a ship that still sticks to the stupid notion of having the nacelles swinging in the breeze.

The only aspects I'd like to have are the shuttlecraft factory, torpedo replicator and cloning lab.
