Perhaps, but in trek, it seems that the security guys never come out
until 6 minutes after the Aliens of the Week have attacked and
have siezed several decks...

Are you talking about the picture or the Petty Officer.

BTW what kind of a rank is Petty Officer anyway? Why not Puny or Meek Officer.

No given their horribale marksmanship, inability to deal with anything, and the fact that they never seem to catch sight of aliens until after they have siezed and fortified several key locations the ST security personell are all in either 10 forward getting drunk off their asses having a wake for thier comerades who died last week, or over in engineering testing that new subspace bong.

You'd know immediately if it was a security ensign on patrol from TNG on. Ensigns in security work in Starfleet are, almost without exception, seriously musclebound. Only senior security officers and security ensigns with names and dialogue are allowed to have normal physiques.

The obvious explanation for the inevitably late appearance of security officers is the following: it takes a couple of minutes to put the barbell back on the rack, take a quick shower, towel off and put on a tight new uniform the better to show off pecs and glutes. Those muscles don't grow themselves, after all.

The rank of petty officer does date back to the mid-1700s, and at the time English was a bit different. There is a great weight of tradition behind the term, and tradition is essential to military organizations, even if that tradition should be recent or synthetic. Also, a proper PO would object most strenuously to being called a "sergeant," and thus be associated with some Marine Corps jarhead or some grunt/footslogger from the Army, as opposed to being a proper anchor-clanker.

The designation petty officer indicates that the person in question is a "minor" or "petty" officer, promoted from the enlisted ranks without a warrant or commission. The US Army equivalent would be a non-commissioned officer or NCO, such as a Corporal, Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Platoon Sergeant, Sergeant First Class, Master Sergeant, First Sergeant, Sergeant Major, or Command Sergeant Major. (I'm sure I forgot at least one sergeant in there somewhere.)

The problem is that "sergeant" as a rank designation would be completely inappropriate for naval use. A sergeant, specifically a petty (or petit) sergeant (or serjeant) was originally an armored, armed and mounted retainer junior to a knight but with essentially the same equipment, just in a cheaper form. That makes the term intimately connected with land battle, as opposed to establishing a connection with being part of the crew of a fighting vessel.

Well, that was long-winded. Now, what's the Finnish equivalent to petty officer? :D :?:
