Was it actually called "The Dominion War" on the series, or is that just a fan term for it?

I think it was also mentioned in Insurrection.

The BS excuse for the Enterprise doing diplomatic duty for such a pissant race (they only achieved warp drive a year prior) was that all the Federation's diplomats were busy negotiating with the Dominion or some crap like that.

No. Federation was in desperate need of any new allies. This was clearly mentioned in the dialogue.
I'm quite certain that "Dominion War" was used many times in DS9.

Incidentally, where was the Enterprise during the war arc? You'd think the flagship of the Federation fleet would be on the front lines, slugging it out with the Dominion.

At first it was protecting Earth by heading up the 3rd fleet (I think it was the 3rd), then later it was assigned to putting out brush fires and trying to get some new planets to sign up.

The thing about the third fleet is from DS9, early in season 6 I think and the rest is frm Insurection.

It was also clearly mentioned that the
Enterprise had been relegated to such duties because most of the Federation's diplomats were tied up with "Dominion negotiations" or some such crap.
It's a contrived excuse either way, I find it ridiculous that an organization comprising so many billions of people would have such a limited number of trained, dedicated diplomats, especially given their tendency to solve everything they can with diplomacy.

I was called the "Dominion War" and often refered to as "the war with the Dominion".
I think that Picard and the Ent-E were not deployed to the frontlines because 1) the DS9 budget could not afford to pay Patrick Stewart and Co. for guest staring roles. 2) when you are in desperate need for allies to send 1 important ship to recruit allies impresses the recruitee alot that they get such attention 3) Picard is a better diplomat than combat commander.

1) Ooh, good point. They could have mentioned it in passing, but I could see the Enterprise being tasked with defense of the inner systems.
2) Eh, but they could have used a slightly lesser ship, like a Galaxy (which is still the largest class in Starfleet), wowed them with the technology on it, and then boast that they have ships with even better technology. I daresay a Soveriegn on the would probably be more useful than a Galaxy in combat, and a race just recently having aquired warp drive will probably not appreciate the difference between the two ships for some time.
3) Simple matter of reassigning him to another vessel for diplomatic duty.

Wear was the Ent-E during the Dominion war? Well according to John Vornholt's "Dominion War" books (non-canon i know) it was fighting along the border until it got dtuck in repair yards during the offensive to re-caputre. While Picard,Ro Laren , Geordie and Sam Lavelle Went to blow up an artificial wormhole.

That would be a major continuity error, then, since Ro Laren left Starfleet to join the Maquis before the war broke out, IIRC.

The impression I got from inserection, as well as from books associated with the time period, is that the Entaprise was one of the ships keeping the Federation together. Picard was a diplomat and the Entaprise, though powerfull, was more usefull as a symbol, being the federation's flagship. If it had been distroyed it would have been a huge blow to morale. The entaprise was zooming arround Federation space, keeping down the fires, nigotiating with frendlies and nutrals and basicly helping to keep the Federation from falling apart under the strain. (Picard being an excalent diplomat was well suted for the job.)

The Enterprise as the flagship is also a very high profile ship and also at the time the most powerful ship in the fleet. The Dominion would be keeping a very close eye on it and such a high profile ship is hard to be inconspicous, a casual news report on the Enterprise's movements could inadvertantly give away an entire operation. Again there is also the major blow to morale if the second Enterprise in 6 +/- years were to be lost, not to mention the flagship of the entire fleet.
Considering just how many diplomats the Federation would likely be capable of fielding, by Dominion negotiations it is probably meant more generally, lobbying neutral races to join the war against the Dominion or provide some sort of support for the Federation and its allies, the Enterprise, despite being a top of the line and extremely powerful ship has just as much propaganda and prestige power as it does firepower. Ships, especially ships of notoriety and prestige, if used properly can be more effective weapons of politics than warfare.

You are correct, she did leave Starfleet and joined the Maquis. Although her fate was never revealed though when the Dominion killed most of the Maquis, so she is either dead or hidden somewhere.

I've read the Dominion War books, and Ro Laren was part of the remnants of the Maquis in that book, so there aren't any continuity errors that I could see.

In the post Season 7 novels Ro is alive and working as the security chief on DS9. Avatar Books 1 & 2 in the DS9 post series follow up are good. After that the DS9 novels are a little spotty at times.

Ro Laren was ferrying sum maquis brass away from the maqius colony before it was blown up. she then jioned in a fight with a dominon ship until rescued by the ent-e Ro told Picard bot rumours of the artifical wormhole and he used ro's shpip to get ot it 'cos starfleet wudn't let him use the EnT-e FOR SUCH A DANGEROUS MISSION ON THE WORD OF A MAQUIS TRATIOR.[/quote]

IIRC It was stated in the 4 part Dominion War books, ok not cannon but losten, That the Enterpise E and indeed the Soverign where very visable ships. THe Enterprise is the Flagship and can't be involved in sneak attacks etc because it would be missed if removed from it;s normal patrol routes etc.
