TOS movie uniforms with TOS series colors

Post by Galvatron »

It may be sacrilegious at this point, but am I alone in thinking that Nick Meyer should have gone back to the original color-coding of the uniforms when he changed them for ST2:TWoK?

My initial reaction from looking at this photo is no, but having a second look, I think the only thing I find horrendous is the yellow. Otherwise, red was a pretty damn good color with that uniform style.
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

Technically they should be green anyway. Image

But aside from that, no. I think the red worked well, though the blue is pretty snappy. But I preferred having more gradation for departmental colors than just the three, honestly. There's a huge gulf between Engineering and Security, for instance. And it's certainly useful to be able to tell the difference from your Medical Doctors and some random astrophysicist, y'know?

But doing all that as the primary uniform color would just look dumb with the rainbow ship crews, so having a singular primary color with less prominent divisional colors was the best way to do it.

I didn't know TOS had 'grey' uniforms.
Other than that I like it.

I don't recall if TOS ever showed us Starfleet trainee uniforms so I think grey was just invented for scratch by whomever Photoshopped the pic.

Saavik was already a Lieutenant JG when we first met her if I recall correctly.

I know, but she was apparently still a cadet.

After some research, it appears that TOS did show us what a Starfleet cadet wore back in Kirk's academy days.

They both fall under Operations as the department I think.

I actually quite like those uniforms. More than the original TOS, TNG, or most of the others, probably, and nearly as much as canon TOS films.

My favourite are the Voyager/early DS9-era uniforms though. Sue me. :D

I'd like to see how they'd look with black turtleneck shirts instead of the white (or red, grey, etc.) to more closely resemble the TOS series neckline coloration.

The Voyager unis would be a nice alternative for the TOS movie utility uniforms worn by the enlisted crewmen, but I never particularly liked the officers wearing the casual-looking pajamas of the TNG era or the long sleeve T-shirts of the original series.

I'll probably be called a heretic was suggesting anything in ENT was something else then worst possible thing in existance, but ENT uniforms are one of my favorite uniforms. They're practical and while they got department colors they're not too obvious (so specialist don't carry a bullseye when on a landing party). I like the red TOS movie uniforms or the late DS9 and TNG movie uniforms because of similar reason while not quite as practical as the ENT jumpsuits (no visible pockets for example) they still look more like duty uniforms then casual wear and the department colors while visible aren't too visible.

I thought Nick Meyer resolved that nicely by giving Starfleet officers excursion jackets for away missions.

I'd actually have wanted the division colours a little more visible on the ENT uniforms but other than that they very easily the most practical of the lot.

Another work around was that engineering vest that Scotty used to wear. That said I was talking only about the uniforms themselves not the addons.

I like the look of these a lot actually, if one of my friends goes for a custom uniform for convention purposes I'll try to convince them of this (it looks better then most designs...)

Wasn't that the same vest they wore under the excursion jacket though?

I'm aware of that. My point was that the greater differentiation of the TWOK scheme is better than the tri-colors the rest of Trek uses. At least make Engineering and Medical their own separate branches if nothing else.

What greater differentiation of the TWOK theme?

TWOK Department Colors
White – Command Division
Gold – Operations Division: helm and engineering branches
Gray - Operations Division: communications and navigation branches | Sciences Division: scientific research and technical branches
Dark Green – Operations Division: security branch
Light Green – Sciences division: medical branch
Red – cadets, trainees and junior officers
Light Blue – special services
Black – enlisted & non-commissioned officers
Dark blue – Operations Division: Federation forces

I can quibble about the specific assignments - Gray seems to be a catch-all, for instance - but the idea is sound.

It's also needlessly complicated. Don't get me wrong, I like the added pieces of bling around the sleeves and the shoulder strap, but I think some of the aforementioned divisional colors are are fugly in contrast with the maroon of the officer's jacket.

That's why I think the design and decor of the TWoK uniform combined with a return to the TOS color palette would be the best of both worlds.

Personally I thought the colors were overly subtle was the only real problem with them.

The OP image is too harsh IMO though. The blue is okay, the grey I could live with, but the yellow is too mustard-y and kind of overwhelms the image. Mainly though the problem is there's too much color, part of the good thing about the TOS movies is they had a pretty unified color palette (except STI and STV and we know how those went). From a design standpoint, it was nicely harmonious, and the jackets were a decent maturation from the more casual turtleneck look of TOS.
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.
